Westminster child abuse inquiry AXED after seven months of problems

Theresa May today announced she is scrapping the wide-ranging inquiry into child abuse, after seven months of delays and criticism.

The Home Secretary said she would set up a new probe, this time headed by a New Zealand high court judge, after two previous chairman were forced to resign for their British Establishment links.

The existing panel announced in July last year will be broken up, with the new inquiry now able to look back at cases earlier than 1970.

New Zealand High Court judge Lowell Goddard will lead the new inquiry, to avoid any claims of a conflict of interest with politicians, police or the judiciary in the UK.

Justice Goddard warned the inquiry will be 'long, challenging and complex'.  (more...)
