Who is Fr. Robert Sirico? Catholic Libertarians and Sexual Liberation

gay clergy Catholic business Libertarianism free markets necons homosexuality
“Just as the unity of human society cannot be founded on an opposition of classes, so also the right ordering of economic life cannot be left to a free competition of forces. For from this source, as from a poisoned spring, have originated and spread all the errors of individualist economic teaching.” Pope Pius XI, Quadragesimo Anno (1931)
Although largely unnoticed in the Catholic press, there has been an odd shakeup at First Things magazine. Once the grand old dame of Catholic neoconservativism, First Things has, over the past two years, dared to question one of the sacrosanct tenets of Catholic neoconservativism: free market economics.

In June of 2016, First Things published an article by David Bentley Hart titled, “Mammon Ascendant: Why Global Capitalism is Inimical to Christianity.” In his piece, Hart, an Orthodox (with a capital “o”) theologian at the University of Notre Dame, argues that the Reagan era coalition between fiscal and social conservatives has “largely collapsed” and big business is now allied with the political left.

Hart’s analysis of the alignment of much of the corporate world with the radical left is no shocker. Gay couples have become de rigueur for television programs and advertisements for everything from Coca Cola to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. However, Hart’s primary point is free market economics goes hand in hand with moral degeneracy.  (more...)

The loudest opponent of Italy’s new anti-migrant policy? The Catholic Church

“The church can’t stay silent,” said Corrado Lorefice, the archbishop of Palermo.
“I can’t stay silent.”
ROME — In a small church in central Italy, a priest told his congregation one recent Sunday morning that the motto of Italy’s highest-profile politician — “Italians First” — was antithetical to Christianity itself. Farther north, another parish priest said that supporters of the country’s new governing hard-line anti-migrant party “cannot call themselves Christian.” On the island of Sicily, an archbishop speaking in a public square took an even broader swipe, criticizing politicians who drive “their own miserable success” by exploiting fear about migrants.

“The church can’t stay silent,” the archbishop of Palermo, Corrado Lorefice, said during that speech, which marked a local holiday. “I can’t stay silent.”

As Italy’s migration politics swing to the right, the Catholic Church is responding with an oppositional roar.

Pope Francis, during the five years of his papacy, has spoken about the humanity and rights of migrants, cautioning about the anti-immigrant sentiment taking hold in parts of the developed world. But those warnings only recently turned into a clarion in the very backyard of the Roman Catholic Church, where one of the world’s most Catholic nations has ushered in a populist government that pledges to “stop the invasion” and tighten its doors.  (more...)

Hotlips Goldy
The Canadian Anti-Hate Network is deeply concerned that Faith Goldy, a prominent figure in the alt-right movement who associates with neo-Nazis, has registered to run in Toronto’s mayoral campaign.

Formerly a Rebel Media personality, Goldy was fired after she appeared on a podcast associated with the alt-right neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer following the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, where Heather Heyer was murdered by a neo-Nazi.

Goldy shares neo-Nazi talking points and slogans such as the infamous Fourteen Words coined by the leader of the neo-Nazi group The Order, which was responsible for the murder of radio host Alan Berg.

Goldy has been associating with members of Students for Western Civilization, which is named in the Alt-Right Montreal leaked chat logs that led to the expose of Montreal neo-Nazi ‘Zeiger’. The logs reveal that the leader of Students for Western Civilization met the Alt-Right Montreal crew in person and was in their internal chat room. They provided ‘security’ for Goldy when she was invited for a talk at Wilfrid Laurier University in March, organized by Lindsay Shepherd and the Laurier Students for Open Inquiry.

Goldy has been kicked off fundraising platforms, like Patreon, which cited her sincere recital of the Fourteen Words in its explanation. Last week she retweeted a tweet from a 4chan account referencing an antisemitic conspiracy theory that Jewish people control finance and the media: “As shown by the deplatforming of @FaithGoldy, the financial system is run by a nasty group of people that has controlled the will of the people for far too long.”  (more...)

HAMILTON, ONT. – A former teacher who was driven from the profession for expressing racist and white nationalist sentiments wants to be the next mayor of Hamilton, Ont.

Paul Fromm, 69, who described himself in a YouTube video as a “populist and a white nationalist,” filed his nomination papers on July 20. He took up residence in Hamilton six months ago, after living in Mississauga for several years.

He will be running against 11 other candidates in the Oct. 22 municipal election, only three of which, including the incumbent, Mayor Fred Eisenberger, are generally considered to have a reasonable chance of winning (Fromm is not considered to be a serious candidate).

Fromm, who has supported Holocaust deniers such as Ernst Zundel, once shared a stage with former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke and describes immigrants as the cause of traffic congestion in the Greater Toronto Area and a drain on public resources, said in an interview with The CJN that he is running in Hamilton on a platform of infrastructure renewal.

“Number 1 is an issue that bedevils the entire Golden Horseshoe and that is traffic gridlock. It is slowly grinding many parts of the Horseshoe to a halt. It is costing a fortune and it’s getting worse every year,” he said.

Fromm blamed the gridlock problem on the failure of provincial and federal governments to spend money on road projects, but added that the problem is aggravated by Ottawa’s refusal to stem the flow of immigrants into Ontario.

“The federal government continues to pour people into the Golden Horseshoe. We’ve had over two million in the past 20 years, yet the infrastructure has remained, with the odd exception, the same,” he said.  (more...)

Police, spies and white supremacy: A brief history

CSIS corruption crime fascism police Nazi

This week in Quebec City, FBI agents gathered for an annual conference hosted by the non-profit FBI National Academy Associates, a group with over 20,000 members drawn from a cross-section of law enforcement agencies around the world.

One of the conference’s keynote presentations focused on "radical left wing gangs in America." The topic of right-wing terror was not on the agenda, with keynote speaker Dale Yeager denying its existence in an interview with VICE News.

Quebec City is an ironic place to be holding such a conference.

Just last year, a racist gunman walked into a local mosque and killed six people during prayer. In his interrogation, the shooter said that he was worried about Muslims immigrating to Canada.

The city is a hotbed of far-right organizing. La Meute, arguably Quebec's largest Islamophobic and anti-migrant formation, is highly active in the city. Atalante, an openly fascist skinhead crew whose membership includes individuals convicted of racist knife attacks, is based almost exclusively there. Racist, nativist "radios poubelles" (trash talk radio) dominate the airwaves.

Right-wing violence is indeed ascendant, and has a significantly higher body count in the United States and Canada than any other form of politically motivated violence. The historical relationship between the street-level far right and state security forces helps to make sense of the conference. While that history is littered with conflict and contradiction, it is also a history of collaboration.  (more...)

It’s history revisiting us

fascism Nazi immigration war politics xenophobia refugees

Many of us Maltese, like many Europeans and people in the West, think refugees could be genuine, legal, but only when they say so. When we accept that they could be genuine refugees who justly come and claim help from better, safer countries, we refer to the past.

Times like when the Maltese themselves, torn with poverty and economic limitations, had to seek better lives in Canada, America and Australia. The time of World War II, we think, would have been a time when refugees were genuine.

But one thing we hate doing, is looking in the mirror, and seeing our bigotry. In the 1930s and up until World War II, we hated Jews and refugees just as adamantly as we do today. We Europeans hated them, despised them, dehumanised them and tried to shut them out, and this was true for laymen and politicians.

After the war, you can read through history and see that we thought we had done a great job of welcoming them and being humane to those in need. You will find that the same politicians, priests and leaders who had previously fought for and waved the nationalistic banner of hatred for the Jews and the persecuted, were, after the war, claiming that they loved the refugees, wanted to help those in need and would open the doors for them – words changed, policies didn’t in the most part.

When us Maltese went to live in the US, Canada and Australia, we too were looked down upon, we too found many doors closed. We too were hated and despised, dehumanised and accused of every rape, thievery, prostitution ring and crime. We know what it feels like when your kids are looked down upon, when you can’t work at the job you studied for but have to go into manual, low-paid jobs. But did we learn anything?  (more...)

Nazi Sympathizers Pushing to Take Over Europe’s Spy Agencies

A slow-simmering scandal in Austria has brought into public view potentially disastrous divisions among Western intelligence agencies. As far-right politicians have joined coalition governments in Austria and Italy and taken ministerial positions in charge of security and law enforcement, concerns have grown among intelligence professionals that they will ignore or even encourage the threat of violent ultra-right extremists.

The extreme right is now in charge of the interior ministries in both Vienna and Rome, putting conspicuous pressure on the intelligence services. In Austria, there have even been police raids on the homes and offices of top intelligence service staffers.

Already, at least some intelligence sharing between Germany and Austria appears to have been curtailed, and the relationship between Italy’s extreme-right-wing interior minister Matteo Salvini and other major European countries is severely, publicly strained. French President Emmanuel Macron last week likened the rise of such populists to “leprosy all across Europe.”  (more...)

From Malthus to Mifepristone: A Primer on the Population Control Movement

The population control movement, perhaps better identified as the contraception-abortion-sterilization medical-industrial complex, is one of the world’s most powerful social movements. This book provides a brief history, and contemporary description, of this movement.

Our narrative begins in the 1790s with Malthus’s Essay on Population. Malthus wrote for two audiences. To the general public he pontificated highfalutin pseudo-science. To fellow gentry he anxiously introduced Political Economics.

Malthus did not really think the world was overpopulated. He wrote about the “scanty population of the earth.” He worried not about Earth’s ecological carrying capacity but about: “the natural tendency of the labouring classes of society to increase beyond the demand for their labour.”

The Berkshire Bread Act (1795) spurred Malthus to activism. The Act used parish levies to supplement incomes of the poor. Certain rural elites, represented by Malthus, feared such payments would undermine labour discipline.

In 1803 Malthus said of the unemployed man:
“…if the society do not want his labour, he has no claim of right to the smallest portion of food, and, in fact, has no business to be where he is.”
Malthus did not want English labourers to emigrate. He did not want them to stop having kids. He simply did not want them breeding beyond the market demand for their labour. (more...)

Why tracking 'hate incidents' that don't break the law is crucial to tackling rise in hate crimes

Irfan Chaudhry
From Mohammed Abu Marzouk being viciously beaten on his way home from a picnic, to a man in a grocery store refusing to let another customer leave and calling him a 'illegal immigrant' — hate-fuelled confrontations in Canada appear to be on the rise.

According to a Statistics Canada report released in June, police-reported hate crimes are increasing. But experts say the observation of incidents of hate that fall outside criminal offences are also crucial.

"I often go back to an analogy that a colleague of mine Barbara Perry, a leading hate crime researcher in Ontario, [uses]," said Irfan Chaudhry, the director of the office of Human Rights, Diversity and Equity at MacEwan University. "She talks about the 'slaps' versus the 'punches' — the punches being that hate crimes are more obvious, they're more physical ... they're the ones that we hear more about. But the slaps are just as impactful."

Chuandry helps run an online tool called StopHateAB.ca that tracks hate incidents in Alberta.

He spoke to The Current's guest host Ioanna Roumeliotis about why paying closer attention to more subtle forms of hate-fuelled violence can help in understanding the climate of hate and possibly preventing future attacks.  (more...)

Police in London, Ont. say their hate crime unit is investigating an altercation between two men at a local grocery store.

In a now widely-shared Facebook video, a man appears to be blocking the path of another man at the checkout area of a Sobeys.

A man in a red shirt holds a phone to his ear while preventing a man in a hoodie from leaving the store.

The video, posted by Facebook user Katie Pocasangre Montoya on July 17, has since been viewed nearly two million times.

In her post, Montyoa claims the man in the red shirt called the other an “illegal alien” and demanded to see his “Canadian documentation.”

The man in the hoodie can be heard saying “don’t touch me” and “I want to leave, stop assaulting me” while the other man continues to obstruct his path.

Const. Michelle Romano said there was some sort of argument between the two inside the store before the altercation at the checkout, though it’s unclear what it was about.

Despite this, she said the actions of the man in the red shirt are “quite disturbing.”

“That’s why our hate crime unit is looking into the matter,” she said. “Currently, we’re investigating the incident as a possible hate-motivated crime.”

Police received multiple calls from customers in the store about the altercation while it was going on. Once they arrived and spoke to the men, police said both the men “left the store peacefully.”

Romano said the victim chose not to press charges.  (more...)

The Many Shortcomings of Germany's Neo-Nazi Terror Trial

Nazi accountability crime corruption justice fascism police violence immigration shell games Germany

In the end, after a five-year trial against Beate Zschäpe and supporters of the right-wing extremist terror cell known as the "National Socialist Underground" (NSU), it's worthwhile to take another look at how it all began. To examine what happened on that day more than 20 years ago when Zschäpe, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Böhnhardt went underground. It makes sense to focus on some of the details that were initially ignored, at secondary players who seemingly didn't play a significant role -- to understand just how complex the NSU really was.

Back then, on Jan. 26, 1998, police searched a garage in the eastern German city of Jena that had been rented by Zschäpe. They found five pipe bombs containing 1.3 kilograms of explosives. It looked as though the authorities had found a hot trail.

For the trio, that search meant it was time to disappear. Zschäpe and her two companions climbed into an old car to flee toward Chemnitz. But then the car broke down.

It was a completely normal breakdown and normal people would simply have called a tow truck and waited on the side of the road. But Zschäpe, Böhnhardt and Mundlos didn't wait -- and they made it to Chemnitz despite the mishap. After that, they were gone and stayed gone for almost 14 years -- until the terror network's cover was spectacularly blown in November 2011 when Böhnhardt and Mundlos committed suicide and Zschäpe set the trio's hideout in Zwickau on fire.

And what about the escape car they left behind? The trio alerted an old friend from whom they had borrowed the car and who shared their right-wing view of the world. That friend contacted another friend who towed the car away. It was only with the help of such friends that the three were able to erase the clues that could have helped lead the police to their hideout.  (more...)

World Cup Postscript: Palatable Slogans

Nazi fascism Ustaša crime politics sports war violence genocide hate racism xenophobia

ZAGREB/BERLIN (Own report) - The Croatian nationalism, currently causing an uproar at the FIFA World Cup has been supported by the German government for decades. During the World Cup, members of the Croatian national team also sang a song with well-known fascist lyrics - originally a song from a singer glorifying Ustaša fascism and praising the mass murder of Serbs in World War II. Virulent nationalism has been prevailing for years throughout the Croatian society. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) recently confirmed that fascist tendencies are gaining strength in that country. Following World War II, old Ustaša structures had been able to hibernate in the Federal Republic of Germany. Bonn also had supported the growing Croatian separatism in the 1970s and established links to the exile Croatian nationalist groups. In the early 1990s, Germany promoted Croatia's secession - and thus its nationalism - for geostrategic reasons.

Even before the Croatian player Domagoj Vida's remarks became known, one of his teammates staged a provocation, by referring positively to his country's fascist past during the World Cup in Russia. Following the Croatian team's victory over the Argentine team, Dejan Lovren enthusiastically chimed in a song of the Croatian singer "Thompson" that starts with the words "Za dom - spremni!" ("For the Homeland - Ready!"). This had been the slogan of Nazi Germany's collaborator Ustaša fascist movement, which had ruled the Croatian state between 1941 and 1945 and participated in the Holocaust. The exact number of its victims is unknown, however, estimates run from 330,000 to over 700,000 murdered Serbs and up to 40,000 murdered Jews and Romani, respectively. "Thompson" is known for his glorification of the Ustaša-regime. In his songs, he has verses such as "Oh, Neretva, flow down, drive the Serbs into the blue Adriatic Sea," or "Shining star above Metković, send our greetings to Ante Pavelić." Pavelić had been the Ustaša's historic Fuehrer.  (more...)

Rise of populist autocrats driven by corruption

Populist electoral victories around the world in recent years have led many to conclude that liberal democracy is under assault. But the arrest this week of Malaysia’s former prime minister on corruption charges is one of several signs suggesting that widespread predictions of the global demise of liberal democracy are premature.

The implication of the doom-and-gloom view is that liberal democracy’s defenders cannot reclaim the moral high ground until they have re-examined their own political and economic assumptions. Yet it is a mistake to think that the rise of autocrats is all about ideology, or that it represents a widespread rejection of democracy, liberalism, or human and civil rights.

Today’s elected demagogues are motivated not so much by principle as by power and greed – they are in it for themselves, their families, and their cronies. Restoring balance to our off-kilter world requires that we expose the rank corruption at the heart of the new illiberalism.  (more...)

Teacher abuses trust for year of sex

A female teacher’s year-long sexual relationship with a male student led to a guilty plea Friday in Sarnia court.

Melissa Lefebvre, 38, pleaded guilty to touching the student for a sexual purpose while in a position of authority over him during 2016 and 2017. This offence is intended to protect young people between the ages of 16 and 18 from being sexually exploited by a person in a position of trust or authority.

A pre-sentence report was ordered following presentation of an agreed statement of facts. Sentencing was set for Sept. 10.

Lefebvre was a French teacher and student council liaison at Northern Collegiate Institute and Vocational School. The Lambton-Kent District School Board placed her on leave when the investigation started, and she was banned from being on any school board property.

She was charged in July 2017.

Further action will be taken by the board in accordance with the Student Protection Act that deals with the sexual abuse of students.

The agreed facts stated the secret relationship began when the boy was 16. There were approximately 20 sexual encounters between the two, including oral sex and intercourse at the woman’s home, the boy’s home and in her vehicle at local parks.

Lefebrve would often pick him up at an agreed location following his participation in student sports.

The relationship was uncovered when a person became suspicious of the contact between the two. The boy admitted the relationship when interviewed by police.

Lefebvre had told him she loved him but stressed the relationship had to be kept a secret. The boy, dealing with low self-esteem, agreed. He lied to his parents to maintain that secrecy  (more...)

Bush Family Links to Nazi Germany: “A Famous American Family” Made its Fortune from the Nazis

From 1945 until 1949 in Nuremberg, one of the lengthiest and, it now appears, most futile interrogations of a Nazi war crimes suspect began in the American Zone of Occupied Germany.

He did not have to transfer his Nazi assets at the end of World War II, all he had to do was transfer the ownership documents – stocks, bonds, deeds and trusts–from his bank in Berlin through his bank in Holland to his American friends in New York City: Prescott Bush and Herbert Walker [father in law of Prescott Bush]. Thyssen’s partners in crime were the father and [grandfather] of a future President of the United States [George Herbert Walker Bush]. MUNICH — A German court on Wednesday found the main defendant in a high-profile neo-Nazi trial guilty over the killing of 10 people — most of them migrants — who were gunned down between 2000 and 2007 in a case that shocked Germany and prompted accusations of institutional racism in the country’s security agencies.

Judges sentenced Beate Zschaepe to life in prison for murder, membership of a terrorist organization, bomb attacks that injured dozens and several lesser crimes including a string of robberies. Four men were found guilty of supporting the group in various ways and sentenced to prison terms of between 2 1/2 and 10 years.

Presiding judge Manfred Goetzl told a packed Munich courtroom that Zschaepe’s guilt weighed particularly heavily, meaning she is likely to serve at least a 15-year sentence. Her lawyers plan to appeal the verdict.

Violent Neo-Nazi Group Has Disturbing Plans For Canada

An underground neo-Nazi terror cell, one linked to five murders in the United States, is organized and active in Canada.

VICE has learned Northern Order—an until now “phantom” white power organization in Canada—is not only an affiliate of Atomwaffen Division with approximately ten members within the country, but is coordinating its efforts with the violent US based neo-Nazi terror group. VICE previously revealed that the cell’s chief propagandist, a graphic designer who goes by the name Dark Foreigner, was a Canadian based in Ontario.

Furthermore, one member is openly planning to create a hideout and European ethnostate in rural British Columbia favouring exclusively white settlers.

VANCOUVER — A former federal Green candidate disavowed by the party for her anti-Semitic views is on trial in Germany for publishing videos denying the Holocaust.

Monika Schaefer ran unsuccessfully for the Greens in Alberta’s Yellowhead riding in 2006, 2008 and 2011, but the party rejected her as a candidate in 2015 and publicly condemned her views the next year after a video emerged.

German authorities charged Schaefer with six cases of “incitement of the people” for publishing multiple videos denying the Holocaust, said Andrea Mayer, a spokeswoman for Munich’s public prosecutor’s office. Schaefer’s trial began July 2 and is set to continue until August 17.

“The maximum penalty for each case is up to three years’ imprisonment,” Mayer said.

Schaefer was visiting relatives in Germany and attended a court hearing in a different case when she was arrested on Jan. 3, and she’s been in custody ever since, Mayer added.

Schaefer and her brother, Alfred, are German-Canadian and he also faces charges in Germany for Holocaust denial, said Helmut-Harry Loewen, a retired University of Winnipeg sociologist who monitors hate groups.

A court in Munich is due to conclude the trial of Beate Zschaepe, the only known survivor of a far-right cell suspected of killing nine people from ethnic minorities and a police officer, in a case that shocked Germany when it came to light in 2011.

Zschaepe, who has been on trial since May 2013, has been dubbed by German tabloids as the “Nazi Bride” over allegations she manipulated far-right gangsters into carrying out her whims.

As details of official incompetence and missteps around the killings emerged, a national debate began in Germany about institutional racism in the country’s police and security services.

Families of the victims were due to hold a news conference Tuesday, a day before the verdict, to highlight questions they feel the trial hasn’t answered about the actions of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) and its supporters, and about why their loved ones were targeted.

Lawyers for the relatives say the second-longest trial in German post-war history failed to examine the security agencies’ mistakes and the role their informants in the neo-Nazi scene played during the nearly 14 years the NSU evaded arrest.  (more...)

Beate Zschaepe pleaded innocence over a racist killing spree in a final plea Tuesday before her verdict next week.

Turning to the presiding judge in the mammoth five-year trial in Munich, she said: "Please don't judge me for something that I neither wanted nor did."

Zschaepe, 43, stands accused of complicity in 10 deadly shootings carried out by the other two members of the National Socialist Underground (NSU), a far-right terror cell.

The two gunmen -- Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Boehnhardt, both Zschaepe's former lovers -- targeted mostly Turkish immigrants in a string of attacks between 2000 and 2007. Both died in 2011 in an apparent murder-suicide.

Prosecutors have accused Zschaepe of being an active NSU member who helped the two men by covering their tracks, handling finances and providing a safe haven in their shared home.

The Munich court will on July 11 hand down its verdict and sentence in the trial of Zschaepe and four alleged NSU supporters.

A Jasper, Alta., woman who denied the Holocaust in at least one video posted on YouTube is on trial at a criminal courthouse in Munich.

Monika Schaefer, 59, and her 63-year-old German-Canadian brother, Alfred Schaefer, who lives near Munich, are being tried together for Volksverhetzung, which officially translates in English from the German Criminal Code as "incitement to hatred," said court spokesperson Florian Gliwitzky in an email to CBC News on Friday.

"Both are under suspicion, that they published video clips, in which they denied the genocide of Jews in the Holocaust during World War II," Gliwitzky said.

The siblings' trial began Monday this week and continued Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It is scheduled to continue July 12, 13 and 16.

If found guilty, the German sentence for the crime ranges from a fine up to five years in prison.

Monika Schaefer gained notoriety in July 2016 after appearing in a YouTube video in which she described the Holocaust as the "biggest and most pernicious and persistent lie in all of history." She expressed her view that six million Jewish people did not die at the hands of Nazi Germany.

At least one hate speech complaint was filed against her with the Alberta and Canadian human rights commissions.  (more...)

Time to ‘definitively address’ Ireland’s tax haven reputation

business finance politics tax evasion money laundering corruption accountability transparency

Legislation that aims to tackle once and for all the “emerging international view of Ireland as a tax haven,” has been introduced in the Dáil.

Labour finance spokeswoman Joan Burton said there was a need for a standing commission on taxation to deal with tax loopholes and other controversies.

She added that the growing international view and recent academic studies showing Ireland as a tax haven “have to be addressed definitively”.

Ms Burton was speaking as she introduced the Tax Law Reform and Codification Advisory Committee Bill, which would establish a taxation commission.

She claimed that “as a country we are drinking in a last chance saloon with how we participate in international tax justice and progress” and the “vital infrastructure” in the Bill was about this.  (more...)

Fascism and the Politics of Immigration

What do Don Mills and Auschwitz have in common?
In The Hitler Legacy, Peter Levenda noted anti-immigrant sentiment and xenophobia as part of “The Hitler Legacy.”

Fear of “the other” has been a staple of fascist thought and is dominating much of the political discourse on both sides of the Atlantic.

... Peter Levenda discoursed on how immigration from Europe, both Catholic  and Jewish,  melded with other events in the post-World War I period to mobilize fascist sentiment and activism.

Reacting to the advent of the Soviet Union, abortive Marxist revolutions in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, large scale immigration of Catholics from Ireland and Italy and Jews from Eastern Europe, powerful elements of the U.S. power elite embraced fascism and eugenics ideology.

With the onset of the Great Depression, the potential threat of Communism was magnified in the eyes of many powerful American industrialists, financiers and corporate lawyers. Germany’s success in putting down the Marxist revolutions within its own borders, as well as the business relationships between corporate Germany and its cartel partners in the U.S. business community inclined many influential American reactionaries to support fascism.

By the same token, these same elements came to despise Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his “Jew Deal,” as it was called by his enemies. American Jews were seen as hiring Jewish immigrants and thus denying “real Americans” jobs and economic well-being.

Attacking Roosevelt as a Jew and a Communist, American fascists embraced a cognitive and rhetorical position not unlike the view of Barack Obama as a “Kenyan Muslim,” and, consequently, a “traitor.”  (more...)

Legacy of a Nazi Princess: BND Employed Gudrun Burwitz, Heinrich Himmler’s Daughter

It is not very surprising that Heinrich Himmler’s daughter was employed by the BND, the final incarnation of the Gehlen spy outfit. Many of the most heinous of the SS war criminals she worked to protect under the auspices of Stille Hilfe (“Silent Help”) were employed by the “Org” from its earliest incarnation, throughout its time as an annex to the CIA.

Her employment there was ostensibly for two years, ending in the very significant year 1963, when “Team Gehlen” was involved with the murder of President Kennedy.

Some of the many links Stille Hilfe has to people and institutions around the world, past and present:

  • A key German court that was involved in the legal proceedings against the National Socialist Underground.
  • Cardinal Frings, who was instrumental in the rise of Joseph Ratzinger through the Vatican ranks.
  • Jurg Haider attended a meeting of Waffen SS veterans that was linked to Stille Hilfe.

Burwitz remained active in the organization virtually to the end.  (more...)

Given current turmoil in the Church's institutions, notably the Vatican, Bishops' conferences, and the Knights of Malta, an objective re-examination of 20th Century intrigue, secret societies, and hidden agendas must be undertaken. The trajectory from Pope Pius XII to Popes Benedict XVI/Francis reveals many clues to the tensions we witness today.

Another DoFo Fascist Bromance? Matteo Salvini and the dirt of Italy

Salvini's fash rosary
In this 2009 video, Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Home Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister, sings about the dirty smell (puzza) produced by people so disgusting that even animals run away from them. Surrounded by his enthusiastic fans, who hail him: ‘Matteo is the group leader, Matteo is the group leader!’ Salvini joins in the choir; he sings: “Do you smell the stench? Even the dogs run away; (it’s because) the Neapolitans are about to arrive. They carry cholera; they are living earthquakes. You, Neapolitans, have never washed yourself with soap.”

Anyone who knows anything about the party Salvini represents, the Lega, will understand that “Neapolitan” in their jargon more often than not refers to Southern Italians as a whole. Salvini encourages others to sing that they stink (a dirty race) and carry a disease (‘cholera’); the reference to an ‘earthquake’ (terremotati) is used as an insult to denote people destined to bring disgrace upon themselves and then claim assistance and other benefits from the taxpayers. Is Salvini a racist and perhaps a bit of a fascist, people ask? But more importantly, is he the catalyst who can weaponize the deep seated racist and fascist sentiments of Italians “born with a blackshirt” – adding significant weight to the already present resurgence of fascism in Europe?  (more...)
