At 7:50 p.m. Wednesday — nearly 50 minutes into their board meeting — the 22 trustees with Toronto’s embattled public school board had finally finished the evening gown portion of the night.
For the first 50 minutes, the trustees — at that point nine days away from having to prove to Education Minister Liz Sandals this Friday that they’ve complied with 13 directives handed to them Jan. 15 — had kept themselves occupied “celebrating.”
Those 13 directives include removing trustees from decision-making around the selection of principals and superintendents — a process that has led to trustees selecting principals who are beholden to them. Sandals also directed that trustee offices be closed and their expense budgets be lowered to discontinue the practice of hiring constituency assistants.
But heck, there was celebrating to do! (more...)
