Taxpayers to chip in $5M for teacher benefits trust


There’s an interesting quirk in the contract negotiated by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) with school boards and the provincial government.

The contract allows the union to set up an Employee Life and Health Trust (ELHT).

“The parties acknowledge that the establishment of the Trust represents a substantial commitment both within and beyond the term of the current collective agreement,” the contract says.

The board of trustees will be made up of nine voting members — five employee reps and four employer reps.

No problem with that. We should applaud the entrepreneurial spirit of the union in taking on what could end up being a lucrative venture.

Here’s the problem: The government is providing $5 million in startup costs for the trust.  (more...)
