Ontario auditor general to probe deals with teacher unions

TORONTO - The province’s auditor general will crack open the teacher collective agreements to see if the public received good value for its education dollars.

Progressive Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod spearheaded the request to get an accounting of the massive expenditures after it was revealed several recent deals with teacher unions included mysterious payments to compensate them for bargaining costs.

“And when you look at undocumented payouts to unions who run attack ads against the main opposition party in the legislature, you have to wonder if that’s an appropriate use of government funds,” MacLeod said Wednesday. “I think it’s a misappropriation.”  (more...)
