Trial for teacher accused of sex with student goes into day 3

Heading into court for day 3 of the sex trial against him, Andy Olson and his counsel were still deciding whether he should testify in his defense.

The former teacher at the prestigious Shawnigan Lake School is on trial for six charges including child luring, sexual exploitation and assault, all allegedly committed against one female student while he was a house director, a live in teacher at the school, and she was a student.

Monday court heard from house director Debra Anne John, who watched over the boarding house the alleged victim called home during 2014 and 2015. John testified that she came back from March break in 2015 and “I was notified that there had been a relationship between a staff member and a student.” So she notified school officials and Olson was promptly put on leave.

Olson’s defense, Geof Simair asked John about the teenagers state of mind after coming forward. “She was upset that this would wreck Mr. Olson’s marriage? “Yes,” testified John. “And you were trying to convince her that she was the victim?” asked Simair. “Yes,” testified John.  (more...)
