Alberta teacher humiliated students by writing reminders on their foreheads

A Red Deer high school teacher admitted Monday he humiliated his students by mocking them, scrawling reminders on their foreheads and arms, and demanding they stand on their desks or lose participation marks.

At an Alberta Teachers’ Association disciplinary hearing Monday, a prosecuting officer said French immersion students at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School dreaded class with language arts and social studies teacher Louis-Georges Pelletier.

“I can remember a general feeling of not being safe in his class,” one student wrote in a statement presented to an association professional conduct committee.

“Unless you were exceptional, he treated you like a slacker and an idiot,” another student wrote.

Pelletier pleaded guilty Monday to two charges of unprofessional conduct during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years: one count of failing to treat students with respect and dignity, and one count of failing to maintain the honour of the profession.  (more...)
