Why the rush to update the sex-ed curriculum?

This is an open letter to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne:

It is regrettable that you did not publish the proposed changes to Ontario's sexual education curriculum earlier, as you have been repeatedly asked to do by members of the Opposition, so that the public might have had a preview before their publication.

I do thank you for consulting 4,000 pre-selected families, or approximately 0.15 per cent of those families who will be affected. Now, you have released the revised document.

However, you have chosen to ignore a petition, signed by nearly 40,000 families, opposing the changes.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms clearly states that "parents have the primary responsibility for educating their children." I would assume that parents are also responsible for ensuring that their children are properly informed about sexuality. So, why the rush to release the revised document? Was its release date perhaps expedited to draw attention away from the Sudbury byelection scandal? Just wondering.  (more...)
