Parents urge trustees to ditch new sex ed curriculum

A small group of angry parents asked Thames Valley District school board trustees to postpone implementing the new provincial sex education curriculum.

Two parents spoke Tuesday night at a board meeting on behalf of the Parents Alliance of Ontario that opposes the new health and physical education curriculum, the first update in the subject area since 1998.

“My husband and I no longer feel the public school is in (our children’s) best interest,” said Nikee Steinhoff, who said she pulled her four- and six-year-olds out of school because of the new curriculum.

“This has caused a great deal of uproar and concern.”

Before speaking, the two parent presenters were cautioned by board chairperson Ruth Tisdale to keep their points on topic and “not in violation of human rights.”

Steinhoff was told twice to stop her presentation as she began talking about Ben Levin, the former deputy education minister who recently pleaded guilty to making and distributing child pornography, and when she began talking about a London teacher.

“This sexual education curriculum is absolute indoctrination as opposed to actual sexual health education,” Steinhoff said.  (more...)
