Canada is a settler-colonial state. Decolonization of this land means ending Canadian support for Israeli colonialism as well.
The Canadian state has tried to cultivate an image and identity as an exception among settler colonial nations—a leader in both Indigenous reconciliation and multiculturalism domestically and a neutral peacemaker on the world stage.
There’s one obvious exception to this cultivated image. Canada has made an exception of Palestine in its self-proclaimed dedication to racial equity and global human rights, supporting Israel unconditionally despite its documented apartheid, arbitrary detention and torture (including of children), forced expulsions, illegal settlements, ethnic cleansing and genocide against the indigenous Palestinian people.
“Palestine is not the exception,” says legal scholar Dr. Noura Erakat. “The rule is the colonial framework.”
Canada has a longstanding failure to respond to Indigenous and racialized voices calling for the most basic humanitarian treatment of Palestinians. Dr. Rinaldo Walcott said in October that this “exposes the bankrupt situational morality of Canadian politics in a settler-colonial country that can only but support white settler politics elsewhere as the condition of its own existence.”
The moral litmus test of Palestinian solidarity reveals the hollowness of so-called progressive policies of diversity, equity and inclusion—and reconciliation. Rather than redressing injustice, these policies have become redirections that do little to disturb structural inequities and the dehumanization of Black, Indigenous and racialized people. (more...)

Another look at prosecution failures
The Winnipeg Free Press recently published an opinion piece by Royal Military College of Canada professor Lubomyr Luciuk about the proposed release of a list prepared by the 1985 Canadian Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals naming individuals living in Canada suspected of being Nazi war criminals who fled Europe and settled hidden in our country after the Second World War.
At first glance, the author seems to lament the lack of historical success in Canada’s prosecutions of Nazi war criminals and fairly raises concerns about the possibility of falsely identifying people who, though suspected of crimes against humanity, were not successfully prosecuted in a court of law.
While the author is certainly correct about our country’s abhorrent record of prosecuting Nazis who evaded justice, the actual intent of his opinion piece quickly becomes apparent when he dismisses the commission’s director of historical research, who indicated that Canada’s investigations of Nazi war criminals have been historically impeded by poor research.
In contrast — based on his misrepresentation of the evidence and the actual conclusions of the commission — Mr. Luciuk misleadingly concludes that the majority of accusations regarding Nazi war criminals in Canada have been false.
His unfounded assertion is in direct contrast to the findings of a multitude of historians who contend that Canada’s prosecution failures are actually due to a number of regrettable factors including a lack of political will, the disappearance of evidence due to the genocidal murders of key witnesses during the Holocaust, the deliberate destruction of evidence, a failure to consider proof gathered by other jurisdictions in Europe, a refusal to consider enthusiastic wartime Nazi collaborators as war criminals and the ravages of time (including the inevitable demise of surviving witnesses), all of which are sadly convenient for individuals such as the author, who aim to minimize the realities of the Holocaust and its near-annihilation of European Jews. The German Left’s complicity in the Palestinian genocide
While the German left passionately supports many international causes but remains conspicuously silent on the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, conveniently overlooking its own complicity in Germany’s military-industrial ties to Israel.
This is not just an abstract critique. As someone deeply embedded in these spaces, it is impossible to ignore the glaring contradictions within Germany’s so-called progressive movement. What once appeared as a beacon of international solidarity and human rights has become a façade—a hollow theater of selective outrage and performative activism. The ongoing genocide in Palestine, as bombs reduce Gaza to rubble and kill innocent people, is met with shocking silence. The German Left, which claims to stand for the oppressed, is nowhere to be found. Where are the protests? Where are the statements of outrage? They only appear when it’s geopolitically convenient, while the bodies of Palestinians continue to pile up, apparently too inconvenient for their agenda.
To provide context on whom I am critiquing within the German leftist scene: In Germany, the current cabinet is dominated by the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Green Party, both of which claim to be center-left. These parties, however, are vocally pro-Israel and, by extension, pro-Zionist. Their government continues to arm Israel, fueling the ongoing genocide of Palestinians—Germany is the second-largest arms supplier to Israel. By default, these parties, along with their student wings occupying university governments across the country, support the apartheid state and settler colonialism. From the top government structures to the grassroots student bodies, this system is complicit in sustaining genocide.
What’s particularly galling is that these same political forces promote “refugee welcome” campaigns and peace initiatives, presenting themselves as humanitarians while actively backing apartheid and ethnic cleansing. The contradiction is blatant, yet somehow, it goes unnoticed or unchallenged in their rhetoric. The most troubling aspect of this is the silence of the broader left. There are hundreds of leftist activist groups in Germany—anti-fascists, anti-fascist feminists, anarcho-syndicalists, and other radical or progressive left groups that fight for refugee rights or social injustice—who are supposedly fighting against these power structures. Yet, after October 7, 2023, when Israeli violence against Palestinians escalated even further, these groups fell silent. It is worth mentioning that in Germany, the radical left faction ‘Anti-Deutsch’ (Anti-German), whose position is to oppose German nationalism and criticize the mainstream political culture of Germany, is also pro-Zionist. CRA Revocation of the JNF's Charitable Status
In August 2024, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) revoked the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund of Canada (JNF). This is significant because the JNF is central to the Zionist movement, historically acquiring land in Palestine for exclusive Jewish settlement. “They are using these tactics because they are scrambling. We know we will get our land back, it is only a matter of time.” Alice Kisiya’s words ring fierce against the still night sky framing her wind whipped hair. Since 2012, her family in the West Bank village of Beit Jala has faced demolitions and evictions since their restaurant was first destroyed in 2012. Both a journalist and activist, she has spent her entire adult life fighting against ethnic cleansing on her family’s ancestral land. While ultimately backed by the Israeli army and state, the enemy she faces daily is the Jewish National Fund (JNF), a charity that has been operating in Canada for nearly a century, and the “hilltop youth” they send to “rehabilitate” in the West Bank.
The frontline of settler expansion in the West Bank is almost always young men. These settlers are often transplanted from other communities in Israel. Many come from homes struggling with substance use, mental health, and poverty, and are often caught up in the criminal justice and social welfare system. As a response to this growing social problem in Israel, group homes, vocational centres, and yeshivas (Torah study schools) have been set up to provide homes and education for these troubled youth. Seemingly innocuous, the service homes tend to be operated by right-wing groups and rabbis in the occupied West Bank. Touted as offering holistic job programs and social enterprises for at-risk youth, the outposts help displace Palestinians and claim large swaths of formerly Palestinian farmland. This pathway towards occupation allows for funders like the JNF to uphold their public mandate of building social service infrastructure for Israelis, while also fulfilling their underlying goal of Israeli expansion. For JNF Canada, which has been under audit by the Canada Revenue Agency for several years over its non-compliance with Canadian charity law—which prohibits funding foreign armies—its website and public discourse relies heavily on funding such ‘social service’ projects.
While this strategy is employed all over the West Bank, the current tensions in Bethlehem have propelled these youth and their funders into the spotlight. (more...)

The South African anti-apartheid movement of the 1970s and 80s serves as a significant source of inspiration for Palestine solidarity activists today. The reasons for this are hardly surprising; the movement was widely successful in pushing for sanctions and divestment at multiple levels of government, in business and across civil society. Less attention, however, is paid to exactly how this movement was so successful, what strategies and tactics it employed, and how these might be adapted by labour activists organizing around Palestine today.
It is worth remembering that opposition to South African apartheid was not a given for Canada’s labour movement. It took dedicated organizing amidst polarizing Cold War attitudes to get union leadership on side. Solidarity, after all, is not something that pre-exists, or can easily be assumed based on abstract principles—it has to be built through the messiness of social and political struggle.
The Canadian anti-apartheid movement provides a wealth of examples for understanding solidarity as a theory and practice shaped by both the global reach of capitalism and structures that opposed it. But there is another reason for re-examining this history. Today, certain segments of Canada’s ruling elite, from university presidents to Bay Street executives, have an unearned reputation as friends of Mandela. Such revisionism overlooks how powerful people were either indifferent to or complicit in the endurance of apartheid. (more...)

USask faculty association votes to support boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement
In May, members of the University of Saskatchewan’s Faculty Association passed a motion at their AGM to support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, joining over a dozen other faculty unions in Canada that have voted in recent months to support boycotts and/or divestment from Israel. Canadian-led 'Normandy Brigade': From Nazi beginnings to Nazi ending
In the spring of 2024, many significant and interesting events took place on the fronts of the SMO. And one of them was the ongoing strikes by the Russian Armed Forces on the right bank of the Dnieper occupied by the enemy in the Kherson region. At some point, explosive news, in every sense of the word, burst into the reports of successful strikes – a Russian UAV flew directly into the location of the Normandy Brigade, a group assembled from English-speaking militants in the first days after the start of the SMO. Moreover, as a result of the strike, its commanders were destroyed, including the founder of the group, Canadian Jean-Francois Ratelle, better known as “Hrulf”. We tell you about how the Normandy Brigade got its moment of glory and how ingloriously the adventures of its militants ended in our new material.
When Vladimir Zelensky announced the creation of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, hundreds of fighters from various countries rushed to enlist in it. The fact that this war would be completely different from the previous campaigns, of which many of them were veterans, was not understood by everyone at that moment – the thoughts of profit were too captivating. However, even in the first days of the conflict, some people realized that they could earn much more if they put together their own gang and then arrange uncontrolled fundraising, as well as engage in banditry in front-line areas.
Already in March 2022, small armed groups began to appear like mushrooms after the rain in the SMO zone. Jean-François Ratelle (born 12.01.1986), a native of the Canadian province of Québec, decided to follow this path. In his youth, he managed to fight in the Canadian Armed Forces, and in the French Foreign Legion. He was in several hot spots. In civilian life, he tried to play MMA, but his career ended at the very beginning after a series of defeats. Ratelle didn't just believe in money, though. In his own eyes, he was nothing less than a descendant of the Vikings. At the same time, his views were a wild mixture of Scandinavian paganism and Wotanism – one of the trends in modern Nazism. In practice, he expressed them with a Thor's hammer pendant and tattoos depicting the "black sun" and other neo-Nazi symbols. Therefore, it is not surprising that he ended up in Ukraine. And – a few years before the start of the SMO, too. By the events of February 2022, he had already acquired a wife and daughter there.
The new formation was called the "Normandy Brigade". Initially, it tried to accept only whites – at first it was a group of Canadians who arrived in the area of the SMO with Ratelle, but then they were also added Americans, British, Australians, New Zealanders, French, Norwegians, Danes, Germans and even descendants of the colonialists of South Africa. This motley rabble also participated in the events in Irpen and Bucha in the Kiev region, which became infamous after the AFU, which entered there after the withdrawal of the Russian contingent at the end of March 2022, organized mass executions of civilians suspected of having links with the Russian Armed Forces. Numerous facts indicate that along with local militants, foreign mercenaries also participated in the atrocities. However, many limited themselves to taking pictures against the background of burnt-out vehicles, as Bucha quickly turned into a place of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis. And what role the Normandy Brigade played in the events in this town, only Russian law enforcement agencies will be able to say for sure. (more...)

In July of this year, German legal authorities issued an order to Abunimah banning him from giving a speech via Zoom to the Palestine Conference in Exile, organized by supporters of Palestinian rights in Germany in late July.
The order threatened Abunimah with fines and up to one year in prison for participating in the conference.
Abunimah defied the order of the German "regime", stating that Germany "never purged itself of deep and pervasive racism."
Lascaris and Abunimah also discussed increasingly aggressive censorship by social media companies, as well as the growing political instability in West Asia.

Should we subsidize billionaires helping Israeli military?
Last week a judge accepted a copyright infringement request from Indigo requiring Canadian telecommunications companies to block the website Indigo Kills Kids. The ruling came days before protests are planned at 40 Indigo stores.
As of writing, Telus, Videotron and Rogers had removed a website seeking to rekindle the boycott of a store whose owners assist the Israeli military. But Bell had yet to adhere to the judge’s order to temporarily remove the site as the case proceeds.
The censorship bid is part of Indigo and the genocide lobby’s aggressive response to a grassroots campaign challenging billionaire power couple Heather Reisman and Gerry Schwartz’s support for Israeli violence and apartheid. As the judge considered the injunction against the Indigo Kills Kids website, Reisman sent a long message to all Indigo staff explaining how she and her husband don’t actually assist the Israeli military or induce young Canadians to join it. The CEO’s message also suggested that Wednesday’s protests may pose a danger to staff.
Simultaneously, the Reisman/Schwartz instigated Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs announced a BUYcott of Indigo in response to the day of action. Their promotion material states: “Canadians won’t be intimidated by antisemitic lies. Show your support by shopping at Indigo Chapters in store or online on Wednesday, September 25.”
But in an e-mail to its members CIJA undercut their “antisemitic lies” smear. Likely crafted by a newbie enthralled with Israeli militarism, the lobby group’s message boasted that Reisman and Schwartz’s “philanthropy includes the HESEG Foundation, which provides scholarships to Lone Soldiers who serve in the Israel Defense Forces.”
Realizing how this fact undermined their claim that Reisman was targeted for being Jewish, CIJA sent a follow-up message noting, “earlier today we sent out an email promoting a BUYcott at Indigo and Chapters across Canada in response to a BOYCOTT of Indigo and Chapters being promoted by ‘activists’ who keep repeating a vicious lie. In that email we referred to the HESEG Foundation, a charitable foundation founded by Heather Reisman and her husband Gerry Schwartz, and made an accidental error describing what the HESEG Foundation does. Please do not in any way circulate the original email.”
In the follow-up email, CIJA removed any mention of scholarships to non-Israelis who join the Israeli military. Instead, they noted, “Heather Reisman and her husband, Gerry Schwartz, are renowned philanthropists who have consistently supported Israel and the global Jewish community.” (more...)

It is an August 2021 slide deck presentation by Britain’s shadowy, spook-infested Counter Disinformation Unit to the White House National Security Council’s Interagency Policy Committee, which regularly gathers Washington’s spying services together to coordinate on national security matters. The contents amply expose how London’s long-running use and abuse of security and intelligence agencies to warp online perceptions is, by design, spreading the world over.
The presentation, which has never hitherto been publicly revealed, was delivered by CDU operatives on August 10th 2021. At this time, the NSC was meeting daily to discuss policing and suppression of pandemic-related speech within and without the US. The British were seemingly invited to offer the Council best practice guidance on battling “disinformation” and “misinformation”, based on their experiences of managing the CDU, which was founded in 2019. Initially operating in total secrecy, London’s “intelligence community” has been central to its efforts since inception.
The Biden administration’s untrammeled censorship push during the COVID19 pandemic was absolutely rabid, and brazen. Overt state policing of social media so enraged and terrified average US citizens, even Mark Zuckerberg has felt compelled to issue a major mea culpa. In August, he admitted senior US officials successfully “pressured” Facebook to remove untold swaths of dissenting content throughout this period, in almost every case completely egregiously. Meta’s CEO unconvincingly pledged to “push back” against any similar government bullying in future.
As the world’s foremost purveyor and enforcer of mass censorship, Britain’s CDU was inevitably of enormous interest to the Biden administration. Yet, suppression is just one component of the Unit’s - and by extension London’s - never-ending quest for narrative control, and dominance, both on- and offline. As we shall see, psychological warfare, stalking, and harassment are all part of the CDU’s clandestine toolkit.
