Canada’s Governor General Apologizes for Awarding Honor to Ukrainian Immigrant with Nazi Past

 

Canada’s Governor General, Mary Simon, issued an apology for awarding one of the country’s highest honors to Peter Savaryn, a Ukrainian immigrant with a Nazi past. Savaryn, who served as chancellor of the University of Alberta from 1982 to 1986, was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1987, an award equivalent to the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Governor General’s statement expressed deep regret about Savaryn’s appointment and mentioned a review of two other honors given to him in 2002 and 2012.

This apology follows the revelation that Yaroslav Hunka, a veteran who served in the same Nazi unit as Savaryn, was honored in the Canadian Parliament during the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The disclosure of Hunka’s background led to the resignation of House Speaker Anthony Rota and an apology from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. It also sparked a discussion about Canada’s history of welcoming Nazis and Nazi collaborators after World War II.

The University of Alberta, where Savaryn and Hunka were both honored, announced that it would return the money donated by Hunka’s family and investigate Savaryn’s endowment as well as several others honoring SS Galichina fighters. Uncovering Canada’s Secret Report on Nazi War Criminals: Pursuing Justice Decades Later

 

For 37 years, Canada has held a closely guarded secret, a classified report containing the names of 883 possible Nazi war criminals who found refuge in the country after World War II, as was reported on Monday by the New York Times.  This report holds the potential to shed light on what the Canadian government knew about their arrival, the extent of their investigations, and why the majority of them escaped prosecution, the NYT report said. Canada’s stringent privacy laws and government secrecy have kept this report confidential, but a recent political blunder may lead to its disclosure.

The catalyst for this potential revelation was the recent controversial honoring of Yaroslav Hunka, a Ukrainian Canadian man who had volunteered for the Nazi Waffen-SS, a combat group responsible for overseeing concentration camps during the Holocaust, according to the NYT report.  This incident occurred during a visit by President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. In the aftermath, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government is now considering whether it’s time to unseal the long-hidden report, the NYT said.

The discussions regarding the report’s declassification had already begun before the episode with Mr. Hunka. As was noted in the NYT report, Anthony Housefather, a member of Trudeau’s Liberal Party caucus and a strong advocate for declassification, had initiated the deliberations. However, the controversial honor bestowed upon Mr. Hunka amplified the pressure on the government to take action.

Justin Trudeau apologized for Mr. Hunka’s introduction as a “hero,” acknowledging the gravity of the situation. The Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota, resigned amidst the public outrage. According to the NYT report, in response to these events, Trudeau stated that “top public servants are looking very carefully” into releasing the classified list, adding, “We’re going to make recommendations.”

The reasons behind the secrecy of the report, the second part of a 1986 inquiry into war criminals in Canada, have never been fully clarified. The NYT report also said that some Ukrainian Canadians, whose communities included individuals with ties to former Nazis, vehemently opposed the inquiry, considering it a witch hunt and a smear campaign.

In contrast to Canada, the United States has declassified millions of pages of documents related to Nazi war crimes and their perpetrators under a special 1998 disclosure law, according to the NYT report. A report from an inquiry into possible war criminals in Canada has been kept from the public for almost 40 years.

For 37 years, Canada has kept close guard on an explosive roster of names.

The classified report lists 883 possible Nazi war criminals who found harbor in the country after World War II, and many believe it offers insights into exactly what the government knew about how they got there, the extent to which they were investigated and why most escaped prosecution.

He announced his resignation as premier of Quebec the day after. The script of which Parizeau' s words were a part, has its origin in the policy enunciated by Britain's Prince Philip, during his last official trip to Washington, D.C., on May 18, 1990. The Queen's consort boasted about his idea of dividing the Americas into a multitude of "bioregions." In other words, regions based on bio-diversity, in which human beings are considered as just another species of animal, according to their ethnic and genetic background.

Another key player, Lucien Bouchard, started his federal government career in 1984, when he was appointed by the Queen's Privy Council to the board of directors of the Canadian Development and Investment Corporation (CDIC), a Crown holding company set up a year before by British intelligence operative Maurice Strong. Later, as minister of environment in the federal government of Brian Mulroney, Bouchard was helping do the Malthusian dirty work of Prince Philip's World Wildlife Fund. He then "suddenly" turned separatist, and became the leader of the opposition in the Canadian House of Commons, at the head of the Bloc Quebecois-a federal, Quebec-based separatist party which he himself created, to separate the "ethnic" entity called "Quebec," from the rest of Canada. Outspoken medical activist Vera Sharav says everything we were told about the Covid pandemic – the shots and the disease itself – was a “total lie.”

The Holocaust survivor, now 86, called the two-year-long pandemic, marked by endless lockdowns, social distancing and masking rules, a “murderous operation.”

“No aspect of it was really for people’s well-being,” said the petite auburn-haired New York-based activist during a recent visit to Toronto.

Under the protection of imperial figures such as Lord Salisbury and other Cecil family members, Bulloch arranged English construction and crews for Confederate warships that preyed upon American commerce. Western Universities Sold Their Souls During an Engineered Covid Pandemic

 

Think back to October of 2019 when there was a “simulation” of a global corona pandemic that was a ‘chapter and verse’ prediction of the real Covid-19 Pandemic declared only 20 weeks later. It was called Event 201, and it resulted in an agreement among the representatives who had come from all sectors society: Craft a narrative for the governmental / industrial / media complex to hammer society with, stick to it and ignore or attack any assessment not in line with the agreed-upon story line. 

That’s what happened, and it continues to this day. A pall of censorship descended on the planet, and “higher education” of the Western world has protected the iron-clad official narrative every step of the way with all of its vaunted reputation. But you might have seen that coming. After all, Event 201 was a “tabletop exercise” run not only by the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation but also by the respected Johns Hopkins University.  

That there are universities in the US being paid to manufacture strategies to counteract information and perspectives out of step with official governmental accounts is naked fact. Departments within major universities are serving as censors in the interest of governmental power, and they brag about it. And isn’t it of more than passing interest that the positions most rigidly protected are official stories on the 2020 election and of Covid-19, the latter in particular? 

It’s the same way in Canada. Glaring falsehoods within governmental claims regarding Covid-19 quickly generated reactions from within the medical community itself, one of the most compelling being from America’s Frontline Doctors. But the group was attacked by esteemed McGill University through its Office of Science and Society. Simply look at what McGill labelled as misinformation in 2021 in light of what has been revealed since then. 

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, universities in England, Finland, Germany, France, and Portugal (a Canadian university also is found in this group) joined to form Jitsuvax, a collective dedicated to ferreting out any form of “misinformation” that might lead people to be “less likely to accept vaccination”, and finding ways of combatting such unwanted information. In each of those countries, the universities involved are major representatives of the nation’s Academy. Assisted Suicide for BABIES Demanded by Quebec College of Physicians

 

I apologize for using the oxymoronic term “assisted suicide for babies” in the title. An infant is not self-aware and cannot “commit suicide.” Infants want to live, eat, and be held by their parents. And yet, the Quebec College of Physicians wants to expand the Canadian “Medical Assistance in Dying” program to infants.

Watch Dr. Louis Roy, from the Quebec College of Physicians, telling the Commons' Special Joint Committee of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) on Oct. 7 that his organization believes MAID can be appropriate for infants up to age one who are born with “severe malformations.”

Medical Assistance in Dying implies someone wanting to die and getting medical assistance to die in a socially approved manner with some comfort.

Infants under one year cannot possibly choose to die or request medical assistance, so the name does not exactly suit the situation. Instead of “assistance in dying,” infants will be euthanized for the convenience of the parents and doctors who no longer want to deal with problematic babies. Parliamentary Committee drops investigation into ‘hero’s welcome’ for SS Waffen member

 

Parliament has dropped further public discussion into ‘Nazigate’ after the House affairs committee decided to “cover up” the ‘hero’s welcome’ of a Waffen SS member.

“What we have is the cover-up coalition at work yet again,” said Conservative MP Michael Cooper on October 19. He lambasted the House Affairs Committee for going “behind closed doors” rather than dealing with this scandal “openly and transparently.”

“Okay, okay, okay,” interjected Liberal MP Bardish Chagger, chair of the committee. “I think you can hear me, Mr. Cooper.”

According to Blacklock's Reporter, Cooper tabled a motion for the committee to investigate the September 22 incident. Most MPs voted not to discuss the issue in public, then concluded the meeting without comment.

“The only reason it has been necessary to bring this motion at this time is because of every effort made by Liberals and New Democrats to have an in-camera meeting to deal with the issue of the former SS soldier introduced before the House of Commons,” said Cooper.  (more...)

How Canada Became a Nazi Haven

 

Last month, the Canadian Parliament embarrassed itself during an official visit by Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelensky when the entire legislative body gave a standing ovation to a veteran of the Waffen SS, the paramilitary wing of the Nazi movement. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later apologized for the incident. 

To understand what happened, it’s important to realize that Canada, like other Western nations, has a long history of sheltering Nazi war criminals. This was not a matter of negligence but official policy. During the Cold War, these hardened Nazi criminals were seen as valuable allies against the Soviet Union. This policy is all the more shameful because during World War II, the vast majority of Ukrainians who took up arms did so in the Red Army against Nazism.

Lev Golinkin, a Ukrainian-American reporter, has been doing excellent work for The Forward and The Nation bringing this shameful history to light. On this episode of The Time of Monsters, I sat down with Lev to talk about the long history of Canada’s hospitality to Nazi war criminals.

Dark history: How the US experimented on its own people

 

For years, government-related institutes have experimented on their own citizens, mainly minorities, to serve their own interests. Infamous and not entirely disclosed, here are some of the most unethical operations done by the US on its own people and soil.

Several experiments conducted on human test subjects in the United States have been deemed unethical due to their execution without the subjects' knowledge or informed consent. These tests have occurred throughout American history, with some of them still being conducted today.

 These experiments encompass a range of activities, such as subjecting humans to chemical and biological weapons, including infections with lethal or incapacitating diseases. They also involve human radiation experiments, the administration of toxic and radioactive substances through injections, surgical experiments, interrogation and torture experiments, tests involving mind-altering substances, and a diverse array of other experimental procedures.

 A significant portion of these tests are conducted on children, individuals who are ill, and those with mental disabilities, often disguised as "medical treatment." Moreover, a considerable number of subjects in these studies are impoverished, members of racial minorities, or incarcerated individuals.

 Numerous experiments not only violated US laws but were also backed by government agencies or unauthorized factions within them, including the Centers for Disease Control, the United States military, and the Central Intelligence Agency. Additionally, some experiments were funded by private corporations engaged in military endeavors.

The public debate over a Waffen SS member being given a hero’s welcome on Parliament Hill last month is over.

Blacklock’s Reporter reports the House affairs committee dropped further public discussion into how Yaroslav Hunka, 98, of North Bay, was presented in this way to the Commons by his MP, then-Speaker Anthony Rota, on Sept. 22.

“What we have is the cover-up coalition at work yet again seeking to go behind closed doors rather than to deal with this matter openly and transparently to get to the bottom of one of the greatest international embarrassments,” said Conservative MP Michael Cooper (St. Albert-Edmonton).

But a majority of MPs voted instead to discuss the slip in private, then adjourned the meeting without comment.  (more...)

Canadian-Ukrainian professor Ivan Katchanovski’s investigation of the Maidan massacre in Kiev in February 2014  found an organized mass killing of both protesters and the police, with the goal of delegitimizing the Yanukovych government and its forces and seizing power in Ukraine, as he wrote for Consortium News in an in-depth article in 2019. (On Wednesday three policemen were sentenced for the massacre, one was acquitted and one was released for time served. The official investigation ignored Katchanovski’s academic research.)

Natalie Baldwin: Tell us about your Ukrainian background and how you came to be an academic focused on the 2014 coup in Ukraine and the subsequent war?

Ivan Katchanovski: I was born in Western Ukraine. I became interested in politics and conflicts since I was about 10 years old, and I wanted to become professor since then.

The Praising of a Ukrainian Nazi-Linked Veteran in Canada’s Parliament: The Legacy of Ukrainian Nazis Has Reemerged

 

It was an embarrassing event in the Canadian Parliament in late September as Ukrainian Nazi-linked veteran Yaroslav Hunka was honored as a World War II “hero.” Upon finding this out, Canadian officials scrambled to save face. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed that this was “deeply embarrassing.” House of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota, after getting more information about Hunka (after the fact), regretted his decision to invite him. Democracy Now interviewed Ukrainian journalist Lev Golinkin about this revelation. 

It is rather irresponsible that there was no relevant research done on Hunka’s history before anything occurred. Perhaps Canadian officials rushed to prop up Hunka as it relates to the Russia-Ukraine War, of which Canada is a supporter. What is also irresponsible is the standing ovation Hunka got in the parliament, although at the time the audience was unaware of Hunka’s history.

According to the BBC, Hunka served in the 14th Waffen-SS Grenadier Division during World War II. The soldiers in the Division were mainly Ukrainian, and under Nazi command. Heinrich Himmler, who systematized the Nazi policy of genocide against Jews and other “undesirables,” paid a visit to the Division and was very proud of its support for the cause of the Third Reich.  

Hunka kept a journal of his time in the 14th Waffen-SS Grenadier Division. In it, Hunka described the Nazis as “mystical German knights” and was in awe of them. Hunka wrote that his service to the Division was the happiest time of his life.  

Meanwhile, Nazi Germany was carrying out its genocidal policies. In Berezhany, where Hunka was born, 12,000 Jews were living there and were attempting to flee so they would not be eventually targeted by the Nazis. Many could not escape. Max Blumenthal, Editor-in-Chief of The Gray Zone, gave detailed examples of the number of Jews murdered by the Nazis:  

“During the Holocaust, on Oct. 1941, 500-700 Jews were executed by the Germans in the nearby quarries. On Dec. 18, another 1,200 were shot in the forest. On Yom Kippur in Sept.1942, 1,000-1,500 were deported to Belzec and hundreds murdered in the streets and in their homes. On Hanukkah (Dec. 4-5) hundreds more were sent to Belzec concentration camp and on June 12, 1043, the last 1,700 Jews of the ghetto and labor camp were liquidated, with only a few individuals escaping. Less than 100 Berezhany Jews survived the war.”  (more...)

Canadian MP won't condemn honouring of Hunka or 2007, 2010, 2021 honourings of Nazi SS division

 

An investigation by The Canada Files has found that Liberal MP Yvan Baker has not publicly condemned Canadian parliament’s honouring of Ukrainian Nazi, Yaroslav Hunka, nor provided an apology for applauding him. 

An opportunity to take either of these actions came when The Canada Files reached out with a question and request for comment, which MP Baker did not take.

In previous coverage, The Canada Files found that MP Yvan Baker had attended a 2021 Remembrance Day event held by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress’ Toronto branch, which contained the honouring of Waffen SS 14th division, without condemnation from him. MP Baker did not respond to TCF’s request for comment and questions for that article. 

Yet Baker’s lack of condemnation for the honouring of a Nazi SS division is a feature, rather than a bug.

The UCC itself was as formed in 1940 on the initiative of the Canadian government, bringing together a collection of outright fascist, monarchist and far-right Ukrainian Canadian groups, to serve as a counterweight to the pro-socialist Association of United Ukrainian Canadians (which would soon afterwards have its assets stolen by the Canadian government and given to the UCC). The UCC would go on to campaign “to have Canada accept members of the Waffen-SS’s Galicia Division” and “represented Waffen SS members who came to Canada after World War II.” Canada would, from 1947 on, actively seek out European Nazi SS veterans to import into Canada and pull the supposed restriction on Nazi volunteers from immigrating to Canada in 1950.

MP Baker’s connection to the UCC Toronto branch is far deeper than expected. Baker was their Vice-President of External Affairs between 2005 to 2008, according to archived versions (2006, 2007) of UCC Toronto’s website.  (more...)
