OECTA is no longer a Catholic teachers' union

What are Catholic teachers to do when your union promotes and believes ideas that are in complete contradiction to Catholic teaching? Should they not be given the option of cancelling their membership? Let me explain. The Ontario Catholic Teachers Association made it public this week that they intend to officially participate in Toronto's World Pride march. At OECTA's annual general meeting, delegates passed a motion which reads in part: “That the Association show its support for Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) and its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, two-spirited and queer (LGBTTQ) members by registering for, and marching in, the World Pride Parade on June 29, 2014." This endorsement sends the wrong message about Catholic education to students, parents, teachers and administrators.

Why has this large Catholic union in the province of Ontario turned into an activist organization promoting homosexuality? Did the association allow every teacher, and not just teacher-activist-politician, to vote on the issue? What has happened to the mission of saving children's souls? Why spread Catholic lies about human sexuality? The simple answer to all these questions must be: OECTA is no longer Catholic. The time has come for Catholic teachers to look at what options they have to address this gross injustice of being forced to reject their Catholic identity. In abandoning the Catholic truth, OECTA is also turning its back on Catholic schools.  (more...)
