THEY'RE BAAAAACK! Newspaper blitz pushes updated sex education curriculum

In a last-ditch bid to push Queen’s Park to update its outdated mental health and sex education curriculum in time for next September, a coalition of health and education experts has bought newspaper ads running this month across the province.

To pay for them, it raised $20,000 through online crowd-funding.

“Over two million students are being taught from a curriculum that has not been updated in over 15 years … they need the revised health and physical education curriculum now,” reads the ad, sponsored by OPHEA, a coalition of more than 50 hospitals, youth advocates and educators.

The province shelved the fresh curriculum more than three years ago after some parents complained about what they felt was sexually explicit material covered at a younger age than they felt was appropriate, despite broad support from health professionals.

Education Minister Liz Sandals has said only that the province plans to consult more widely with the public but has given no indication when or how that will begin.  (more...)
