The Population Bombed

At Eastern Commerce Collegiate, just off Toronto’s Danforth near Donlands, a school with room for over 1,100 full-time students has just 189.

Within easy walking distance is Danforth Tech, a stately 1920s-era commercial school that is popular for movie shoots, but has 1,100 students in a building that can handle more than 2,200.

These schools are far from alone. Figures show more than one in five of the Toronto District School Board’s schools and programs are operating below 60% enrolment. That’s 140 schools and programs out of a total of 601, according to data submitted by the TDSB during the last school year to Ontario’s ministry of education. Eastern Commerce — at just 16% enrolment — is among 40 sites operating below 40% of their government-rated capacity.  (more...)
