TORONTO — One of Toronto’s top police officers has announced his resignation just a few weeks after coming under fire for suggesting the force was in crisis, needed radical change and could cut hundreds of front line officers without sacrificing public safety.
The Toronto Police Services Board says Deputy Chief Peter Sloly resigned Wednesday after 27 years on the force.
The board’s statement says Sloly will explore new career opportunities.
Board chair Andy Pringle thanked Sloly for his leadership and dedication.
Sloly was among those who vied to become Toronto’s new police chief last year after Bill Blair moved on, but was passed over in favour of Mark Saunders.
At a small gathering at a downtown Toronto entrepreneurial centre, Sloly told the crowd in mid-January the Toronto police force, like others around the world, was in crisis and he feared for its future. (more...)
