TDSB teacher cuts related to enrolment: Sandals

The loss of teaching positions at the Toronto public school board is a matter of math, Education Minister Liz Sandals suggested.

“When the enrolment goes down, you look at how many teachers you need and you’ll need less teachers,” Sandals said Thursday. “They did what I would have anticipated they would do.”

Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustees passed a budget Wednesday that eliminates about 250 jobs, including special education positions, following a drop in enrolment.

Sandals said the bulk of provincial funding for students with special needs is allocated on a per-pupil basis so declining enrolment impacts how much money flows to the TDSB.

Another source of special education funding, set up under the Mike Harris Tories, is based on a student count that is no longer accurate, if it ever was, she said.  (more...)
