Educational assistant charged with sexual exploitation of student with disability

Patrick Persaud, 58
A man employed as an educational assistant at a high school in the city’s east end is facing charges after he allegedly sexually exploited a student with a disability over a period of time.

According to police, the man worked at Neil McNeil High School on Victoria Park Avenue near Kingston Road, where he lured and sexually exploited the victim on numerous occasions.

A suspect was arrested on March 13 and charged with eight counts of sexual exploitation of a person with a disability.

According to Const. Victor Kwong, the charge of sexual exploitation differs from sexual assault in that the victim isn’t able to make a “mature judgment.”

“Exploitation is literally that,” Kwong told CP24. “It is when you exploit someone either because they wouldn’t know better or just because of their maturity and age.”

In a statement released Thursday morning, the Toronto Catholic District School Board said the educational assistant has been removed from Neil McNeil Catholic High School and placed on home assignment pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.  (more...)
