Teen sues school district after relationship with teacher

The teenager who fathered a child with a former Redlands teacher has sued the school district, claiming it acted negligently and created an environment in which the sexual relationship was allowed or ignored.

The father, who was 16 when the relationship with teacher Laura Elizabeth Whitehurst began and is now 18, filed the suit Tuesday, Feb. 4, in Riverside County Superior Court.

In addition to Redlands Unified School District, the suit named Citrus Valley High School, Whitehurst and another teacher, Sarah Seevers. The teen and his attorneys are seeking unspecified damages.

The lawsuit accuses the district of negligence in its hiring and supervising Whitehurst; of causing emotional distress; and of allowing Whitehurst to commit sexual battery, assault and sexual harassment.

“Ms. Whitehurst felt she had carte blanche to commit sexual abuse,” Vince Finaldi, one of the boy’s attorneys, said at a news conference Thursday. “There’s a big problem with the Redlands Unified School District where a teacher is free to sexually abuse a child.”

Redlands school district officials released a statement Wednesday denying wrongdoing by anyone but Whitehurst.  (more...)
