Alberta follows Ontario on Sexual Rights

ALBERTA EDUCATION MINISTER GORDON DIRKS AND MLA SANDRA JANSEN
EDMONTON -- Alberta parents will no longer be able to pull their kids from class when sexual orientation is discussed as the provincial government moves to pass a new law governing sexual minority rights.

On Monday, the Progressive Conservative government introduced Bill 10: The Act to Amend the Bill of Rights to Protect our Children. It aims to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and enshrine parental rights in law while also allowing students to challenge a school board's decision to reject a gay-straight alliance (GSA) club by seeking a judicial review.

Calgary-North West MLA Sandra Jansen said the legislation is an "incremental move forward" for Alberta's LGBTQ community and she hopes there will one day be a GSA in every school.  (more...)
