Police hope to overturn decision to not charge Greville Janner

Former Leicester MP Greville Janner
Police have publicly criticised a decision to not put former Leicester MP Greville Janner on trial for alleged sexual abuse of children.

Senior officers spoke out after Alison Saunders, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), announced 86-year-old Lord Janner of Braunstone was too ill with Alzheimer's disease to stand trial.

The force said it was seeking legal advice on the possibility of overturning the decision.

It said it has interviewed 25 people who allege they were abused as children by the former Leicester West Labour MP as long ago as 1970.

In announcing Lord Janner would not be charged, the DPP revealed details of previous allegations against him and said he should have been charged with offences against children following two previous police investigations in 1991 and 2002.  (more...)
