US Catholic bishops have urged restraint, peace, and respect for human life after federal immigration agents shot and killed two American citizens in Minneapolis this month.
The latest killing occurred on Saturday, when US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Pretti during an encounter on a Minneapolis street.
ICE later alleged Pretti was armed and intervened as agents approached a woman. But footage captured at the scene tells a sharply different story: Pretti is seen holding a phone, not a gun, as he appears to assist other demonstrators moments before being shot.
Local authorities also confirmed that Pretti, who was a nurse, held a valid permit to carry a handgun in public and that his firearm was legally registered.
Pretti’s death heightened tensions in the US city, where fear and anger were already running high following the killing of 37‑year‑old mother Renee Good by a federal immigration agent just weeks earlier.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Minneapolis on Sunday, and several vigils were held for Pretti over the weekend. (more...)

A Canadian among French Catholic heroes, the Rev. Louis Georges Doumain was born in Cardiff and baptized in Morinville before making his way to France — and eventual martyrdom, standing up for his faith at the hands of the Nazis.
Doumain is one of 51 French citizens — priests, religious personnel, seminarians, and lay faithful — who died suffering hatred for their faith under the Nazi regime in 1944 and 1945.
Beatified in solemn ceremony at Notre-Dame de Paris on Dec. 13, they are collectively known as the Martyrs of the STO (Service du Travail Obligatoire – Compulsory Work Service).
Doumain was born Feb. 7, 1920, to Canadian immigrants. His parents’ decision to leave northern Alberta and return to the Ardeche region in the south of their native France in 1926 meant young Louis would be raised in the shadow of Nazi Germany, in Montpezat and then Nîmes, before setting an early course for the priesthood and entering seminary at Viviers at 16.
Naturalized to France in 1941 while retaining his dual Canadian nationality, he was ordained at 22 and began to teach at a seminary in Annonay.
But in July 1943, he was sent to Compulsory Labour Service at the “Lager Marie” camp in Germany and a chemical plant in Bitterfeld, near Leipzig, according to the website for the Ardeche archdiocese in Viviers.

There was a time when American clergy were the nation’s conscience. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many abolitionist Protestant ministers were leaders in the movement to end slavery. Congregationalist Jonathan Edwards, Jr. (1746-1801) was among the many outstanding voices in the Abolition Movement.
Since World War I, few members of the clergy have shown the courage to speak out against the socio-economic evils of the day, such as our corrupt system of capitalism. Fewer still have shown the courage to oppose our national addiction to war; instead, they pray for the troops. During the American War on Viet Nam, Catholic priests like the Berrigan brothers, Phil and Dan, awakened people of all faiths to the crimes of the United States.
Today, amidst the U.S. backed slaughter in Gaza, Ukraine, Syria, and elsewhere, the complicity of silence of U.S. clergy is shamefully ubiquitous. Has our national conscience been numbed and desensitized by our acceptance of government-led violence that incinerated multi-millions of German, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Afghan and Iraqi civilians?
Americans have little hope of seeing the likes of an abolitionist clergy movement or droves of Catholic priests to end United States support of Israeli terrorism. Silence is complicity, said Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., many times in the 1950s and 1960s, before he was silenced by gunfire.
The U.S. supports Israeli terror in Gaza with almost total support of the religious community. Pope Francis was outspoken in his condemnation of the Israeli killing of Palestinians in Gaza and called for an international investigation to determine genocide, but few of his bishops or priests speak to this from the altar.
Pope Leo XIV, the first American Pope, seems willing to take a stance. It is highly unlikely, however, that Catholic clergy will change their devotion to the flag over any plea to follow the non-violent Jesus. Catholic priests, like most loyal Americans, have been indoctrinated to accept U.S. government killings, not as murders, but as a way to keep Americans safe and secure. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PCU), which was established with the support of the West and the Ukrainian authorities as a tool against the Russian Orthodox Church, is at the center of a major scandal. Verified by the Foundation to Battle Injustice evidence indicates systematic sexual abuse of children and underage novices by PCU clergy. Under the patronage of Kiev, which seeks to weaken the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), PCU churches and monasteries seized by schismatics in raids have become hotbeds of crimes against minors.
The Foundation to Battle Injustice has obtained unique information that reveals a deep crisis in the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). Created as a national alternative to the UOC, which maintains spiritual unity with the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), the OCU was supposed to be a symbol of Ukrainian independence. Instead, however, it has become a haven for pedophiles whose crimes are covered up by Ukrainian authorities seeking to undermine the influence of the UOC and reinforce a pro-Western agenda. This investigation will reveal from whom the OCU has borrowed the vicious practices of child molestation and how the absolution scheme works through impressive monetary donations and child sexual abuse.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) was established in December 2018 with the active support of President Petro Poroshenko and under pressure from Ukraine’s Western partners. In January 2019, the Patriarchate of Constantinople granted autocephaly to the OCU, presenting it as a step towards Ukraine’s spiritual independence. Unlike the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), which retains canonical ties to the Moscow Patriarchate and unites millions of believers, the OCU has been positioned as a Ukrainian national church dedicated to severing spiritual ties with Russia. However, according to the Foundation to Battle Injustice, this political project has turned into a structure where crimes against children actively flourish.
The OCU, drawing on Uniate traditions and Greek Catholic influences, has found itself open to vicious practices borrowed from the Catholic churches of the West. Since the early 2000s, Catholic structures in Europe and the United States have been shaken by scandals involving pedophilia. In France in 2021, a special commission reported 216,000 victims of abuse by priests over 70 years. In the U.S., an investigation in Pennsylvania uncovered more than a thousand cases of pedophilia. Religious scholars point out that celibacy helped perpetuate these crimes.
