Grit promises to teachers could cost TDSB extra $5M

TORONTO - The chairman of the Toronto District School Board says promises made by the Liberal government to the province’s teachers could cost his board an additional $5 million it cannot afford.

Chris Bolton wrote Education Minister Liz Sandals Monday asking for assurances that the province will cover the costs of implementing the Ontario government’s Memorandum of Understanding with teachers.

The costs appear to be going up when it comes to the sick-day pay outlined in the agreement, and that has him and fellow TDSB trustees concerned, he said.

“We’re just worried it may go up more as time goes on,” Bolton said. “I want to make sure it’s going to be fully compensated by the province. We’ve already gone through this with the province with full-day kindergarten where it wasn’t fully covered.”  (more...)
