Canadian Health Workers Condemn Colleagues Serving In Israeli Military

 

“Genocide is a significant and an extreme public health catastrophe.”

A group of health-care workers is calling on professional regulators to investigate Canadian doctors and other health-care workers who have served with Israel’s military during its war in Gaza, which the UN has called genocidal.

“Any individual who is a part of the Israeli Defense Force should never be allowed to be anywhere among women and children, and especially Muslim or Arab children,” said Mukarram Zaidi, a physician in Calgary and member of the Canadian Muslim Healthcare Network.

Health Workers Alliance for Palestine (HAP) published its statement earlier this month condemning health-care workers who have served in the Israeli military, saying they undermine public trust in their professions. Twenty-eight groups, including the Canadian Muslim Healthcare Network, signed the statement.

“Patients and learners, especially Palestinians, have every reason to be alarmed and to refuse care and supervision by [health-care workers] and educators with ties to the Israeli military,” HAP said.

“The participation of [health-care workers] in acts that violate human rights is a serious concern. Such acts are explicitly prohibited by the Canadian Medical Association’s Code of Ethics and Professionalism, to which many provincial medical regulatory bodies subscribe.”

“The code clearly emphasizes that physicians should ‘never participate in or support practices that violate basic human rights’ and should ‘never participate in or condone the practice of torture or any form of cruel, inhumane, or degrading procedure.’”  (more...)

The Tribunal contributes to the legitimisation of an alternative paradigm of international law, one that derives its authority from people and their sense of justice rather than relying solely on governments and their institutions.

Ellison is the largest recorded donor to the Friends of the Israel Occupation Forces and previously, reportedly, offered Benjamin Netanyahu directorship of the firm. Its longtime CEO is “Israel” born Safra Catz, who has also donated millions to the Friends of the IOF either directly or via Oracle itself.

A conference on refugee healthcare lost sponsors, and a talk for employees at Canada's public health agency was cancelled, after Palestine advocates were branded as "antisemitic"

Canada’s only refugee health conference saw sponsors pull out and registrations at their lowest levels ever, after it was accused of supporting antisemitism for featuring Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, among the planned speakers.

“This year, because we included Palestine, one of the most central and neglected refugee populations, we have faced unprecedented attacks,” Dr. Anna Banerji said in the run-up to the event.

Banerji is a pediatrician who treats refugee children in Toronto. Since 2009, she has organized the North American Refugee Health Conference, which this year included a lineup of high-profile speakers, like Dr. Gabor Maté, and took place in Niagara Falls from Sept. 11–13.

But organizers say that putting on this year’s event involved challenges like never before, after the pro-Israel advocacy organization HonestReporting Canada (HRC) described the conference as planning to host “peddlers of hateful anti-Israel and anti-Jewish propaganda.”

“Sponsors have withdrawn and speakers have been threatened,” said Banerji. “A few have been afraid to participate, but most have had the moral courage to continue.”  (more...)
