Why is the US spending more than half a billion dollars on a facility near Montreal?

Canada arms manufacture General Dynamics Montreal Salaberry-de-Valleyfield opposition dissent

The US Army is gearing up for a massive $682 million upgrade to the General Dynamics facility in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. The upgrade is set to increase production capacity from 6 to 16 million pounds of munitions and ordnance. This facility is of great importance as it is the sole supplier of the M31A2 propellant used in 155mm artillery ammunition. Investigations have revealed this propellant to have been actively used in Gaza by Israel.

On this episode of Local 514, host Kalden Dhatsenpa speaks with two activists organizing against this planned expansion. The #StopGDExpansion campaign is organizing a protest in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield this coming Saturday, May 30th, in conjunction with concerned residents who believe the expansion will negatively affect their health, the environment around Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, and who have qualms about the end use of the facility’s output.

Canada Exported $14.6 Million Of Military Goods To Israel In 2025

Canada arms exports military goods Israel lawlessness Gaza genocide profiteering

A total of 50 military export permits were utilized to sell goods to Israel in 2025.

Canada exported $14.6 million worth of military goods directly to Israel last year, according to a report published today by Global Affairs Canada.

A total of 50 military export permits were utilized to sell goods to Israel in 2025, the report says.

The military goods were shipped despite the Liberal government stating that it paused approvals of some new military export permits on January 8, 2024 and suspending dozens of existing permits for goods that it believed could be used in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Under the Export and Import Permits Act, the Minister of Foreign Affairs is legally obliged not to authorize military export permits if there is a substantial risk the goods could be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international humanitarian or human rights law.

The report states that two new military export permits to Israel were issued in 2025.

The Maple revealed last year that these permits were for parts related to Israel’s Iron Dome missile system, which allows Israel to inflict massive civilian casualties at a scale that dwarfs its own losses. The two permits were valued at $37.2 million.  (more...)

Defence trade show bars outlets it suspects may produce critical coverage

“With the government of Canada’s renewed focus on defence, […] CADSI is receiving a significant uptick in requests for service, advice, and assistance. Rest assured that your message has been received, and a member of our team will reply as soon as possible.” — Excerpt from CADSI’s general email autoresponse

CANSEC is a global defence and security trade show, and Canada’s largest defence convention. The event, held annually in Ottawa, brings together representatives of private defence companies and dozens of delegations from foreign governments to showcase “leading-edge technology, products and services for land-based, naval, aerospace and joint forces military units.”

On the CANSEC homepage, the convention reports that attendees will also include 45 MPs, senators and cabinet ministers. The convention was founded in 1998, and is hosted by the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI).

This week, Ricochet Media’s request for a press pass to cover the event was declined on the basis that our organization “does not meet the CADSI Eligibility Requirements.”

CANSEC’s media accreditation page states: “New media applicants are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and the accreditation decisions are final. CANSEC is a private event and organizers reserve the right to deny accreditation.”

Just hours after the portal for media accreditation opened, this reporter applied for status on assignment for Ricochet Media. After following up, we received the following response by email.

“Thank you for registering for CANSEC 2026. We have reviewed your application and have declined it for the following reasons:

Your media organization does not meet the CADSI Eligibility Requirements.”

CADSI’s only eligibility criteria regarding media organizations is that applicants must be “a member of an established local, national or international media organization with relevant identification.”  (more...)

Ireland advances bill targeting occupied West Bank settlement goods

Ireland trade Israel occupied West Bank settlements business

Ireland is advancing legislation to ban trade in goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Ireland is preparing to move forward with legislation that would prohibit trade involving goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, amid mounting tensions between Dublin and the Israeli regime over the war on Gaza and settlement expansion.

Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee said the government aims to secure passage of the bill by mid-July despite pressure from "Israel", members of the US Congress, and international business groups opposing the measure.

The proposed law would mark one of the most significant economic steps taken by a European country against illegal settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories.

With this step, Ireland joins 9 other countries in calling for an end to Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank, warning that escalating settler violence and "annexation" policies are undermining regional stability and prospects for a "two-state solution".

In a joint statement issued Friday, the leaders of Australia, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, and New Zealand condemned continued settlement construction by the Israeli occupation, stressing that such projects violate international law.  (more...)

Canada University of Toronto CANSEC trade show independent journalists prohibition censorship

“Your media organization does not meet the CADSI Eligibility Requirements.”

Canada’s largest arms fair has refused media accreditation for multiple independent journalists and media outlets, including The Maple.

The CANSEC trade show, hosted by the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries (CADSI) at Ottawa’s Cohere Centre this Wednesday and Thursday, is an annual event that attracts hundreds of arms companies and dozens of Canadian politicians as attendees.

Keynote speakers at this year’s event include Defence Minister David McGuinty and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, as well as former United States president Joe Biden’s national security advisor, Jake Sullivan.

The organizers state that they work with the Canadian government “to engage a diverse global community” and list the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces as their “strategic partners.”

The Maple applied for media accreditation for this year’s CANSEC, but received an email from CADSI’s press team explaining that: “We have reviewed your application and have declined it for the following reasons [...] Your media organization does not meet the CADSI Eligibility Requirements.”

CADSI did not respond to questions from The Maple asking for details about its eligibility requirements and why it believes The Maple did not meet them. The Maple requested the decision to be reviewed, but heard nothing further from CADSI.  (more...)

Demand That UofT Revoke Its Sponsorship of the Weapons Conference CANSEC

Canada University of Toronto academia UofT weapons conference CANSEC sponsorship opposition revocation protest

🚨URGENT ACTION 🚨

Go to the link in @torontostudentsforpalestine bio to send an email TODAY to U of T to demand that they revoke their sponsorship of the weapons conference CANSEC.

CANSEC is a weapons trade show that hosts numerous weapons manufacturers and governments accused of war crimes and human rights abuses. A few of the weapons manufactures exhibiting at CANSEC that are complicit in war crimes and/or human rights violations include Elbit Systems, Roshel and Lockheed Martin.

This year U of T became the first university to ever sponsor CANSEC.

On May 12th U of T students, workers and faculty published an open letter demanding that the University of Toronto revoke its sponsorship of CANSEC. This letter was signed by 20 U of T student, worker and faculty groups and unions, but has so far been ignored by U of T administration. Additionally, on May 13th the U of T denied a student the opportunity to express concerns about the sponsorship of CANSEC at the University of Toronto Governing Council meeting despite the student following all proper procedures to speak.

These actions are in direct violation of U of T’s mission statement that commits to the “vigilant protection for individual human rights, and a resolute commitment to the principles of equal opportunity, equity and justice”.

Operation Geschäftsfreund: How West Germany Paid for Israel’s Nuclear Bomb

Dimona nuclear weapons program Negev Israel Germany money laundering deception

In March 2026, an investigation in Haaretz argued that West Germany may have “secretly financed” much of Israel’s Dimona nuclear project through off‑the‑books loans worth roughly 2 billion Deutschmarks, funneled under the cover of “Negev development.” Historical clues indicate that Germany secretly funded Israel’s nuclear program and raise the questions about how much Dimona cost, who really paid for it, and what that says about Germany’s postwar “moral responsibility”.

This article picks up where that story stops. It goes back to Bundestag files, development‑bank records and declassified intelligence histories to show, in considerably sharper detail, how Bonn built a secret credit machine for Israel, who ran it, and how it locked Germany into a nuclear order it still refuses to name.

Germany did not just look away while Israel built the bomb. It helped pay for it, hid the money off the books, and then spent decades pretending that nothing of the sort had ever happened. Today, the same state that secretly bankrolled Dimona presents itself as a guardian of non‑proliferation and lectures Iran on the dangers of nuclear ambiguity.

Germany never tires of preaching its “historical responsibility” to Israel. Reparations. Moral duty, and postwar atonement, even though the archives expose a different reality. What actually happened was a cold-blooded, decade-long secret cash pipeline, codenamed Operation Geschäftsfreund  (Business Friend)— that funnelled nearly two billion Deutsche Marks into Israel under the cover of “development” projects while Bonn kept parliament, the public and much of its own bureaucracy in the dark.

The key paper trail runs through the Bundestag’s own 2012 reply, Drucksache 17/10482. There the government finally acknowledged that Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion struck a confidential understanding at the Waldorf Astoria in New York on 14 March 1960: a special 2 billion DM credit line, paid out over roughly a decade and shielded from public scrutiny for “foreign-policy reasons.” The arrangement was implemented through the state development bank KfW and booked as bilateral capital aid for Israel’s economy, formally “development assistance,” in practice something far more sensitive.  (more...)

Elbows up? Canada is letting Pentagon take ‘unprecedented’ stakes in Canadian mines

Canada mining resource extraction First Nations US military Pentagon weapons manufacture

By fast-tracking critical minerals, Canada is not simply building a green economy. It is being further integrated into the U.S. war industry

Even as Prime Minister Mark Carney touts his plans to protect Canada’s economic sovereignty, the country’s critical minerals are making their way into U.S. weapons.

According to legal experts, the U.S. is taking “possibly unprecedented” measures to secure ownership over Canadian mines, turning Canada—and the First Nations from whose lands the minerals are sourced—into a U.S. mining territory. All the while, the Canadian government is helping fund and fast-track these projects.

From the provincial to the federal levels, Canada has been on a tear of expediting the extraction of critical minerals from its far north. These minerals were branded as “urgently necessary”—first for the transition to clean energy, and then, amid U.S. annexation threats, for Canada’s national security.

Nickel, copper, graphite, cobalt, tungsten, chromium, and rare earth elements are not just inputs for batteries and wind turbines. They are also needed to build fighter jets, drones, missiles, radar systems, submarines, armour, and ammunition.

As I explain in a policy paper for the Transition Security Project, Canada has long been a reliable supplier of inputs for the United States’ wars. From Canada’s underbelly came the uranium for the U.S.’s nuclear bombs, nickel for armoured plates on its battleships, and aluminium for its warplanes.

But when Canadian minerals are being earmarked for foreign military manufacturing, is that really in Canada’s national interest?  (more...)

Leaked Documents Show Cisco Systems’ Deep Relationship with Israeli Security State

CISCO Systems Silicon Valley business Israel military collaboration technology military opportunism communications

“Never Let a Good Crisis Go To Waste”: Internal documents show Cisco’s growing collaboration with the Israeli military over the course of the genocide in Gaza.

Cisco Systems is one of the most consequential—yet least visible—corporations in Silicon Valley. The San Jose-based networking giant, with a market capitalization in excess of $270 billion and annual revenue of $56.7 billion in 2025, manufactures the routers, switches, firewalls, and communications platforms that run the internet’s infrastructure, as well as many of its worldwide corporate, government, and military networks.

Cisco makes a point of publicly highlighting its commitment to corporate social responsibility, and building “an inclusive future for all” in the dozens of countries around the world in which it operates. Yet the company’s aggressive pursuit of contracts with the Israeli government and military—a small yet growing part of its global business—has led to accusations that behind this sunny facade the networking giant is profiting from genocide.

A new set of leaked documents—provided to Drop Site by whistleblowers disturbed by the company’s operations in Israel—shows Cisco’s deep and growing collaboration with the Israeli military and intelligence establishment in its regional wars and the genocide in Gaza.

In 2025, an Israeli Air Force officer publicly discussed using Cisco-powered infrastructure to support operations. The anonymous officer, identified as the head of the Israeli Air Force’s operational branch, told a tech conference in Israel that the Air Force had conducted “tens of thousands of attacks” in the past year, and described how IT systems had been vital to enabling this combat activity. The officer referenced Cisco infrastructure being used by air force intelligence personnel for communications and managing high volumes of operational data—including the use of networking tools by drone operators and ground forces to store and analyze videos and share coordinates for strikes.

Cisco’s work with the Israeli government and military has been documented in public news reports and new business announcements in the country. But the internal documents—including presentations, purchase and revenue records, and schedules—shed light on the rapidly expanding list of services that Cisco has been providing directly to the Israeli Ministry of Defense and other branches of the security state over the past several years.  (more...)

Microsoft ousts Israel country manager over mass surveillance system targeting Palestinians

Microsoft Azure Israel Unit 8200 mass surveillance lawlessness

The probe revealed that Microsoft Azure servers stored millions of Palestinian phone call recordings for the Israeli army’s Unit 8200

Microsoft Israel country general manager Alon Haimovich was removed from his post after an internal investigation into the branch’s ties with the Israeli Defense Ministry, Globes reported on 11 May.

The Israeli office was placed under Microsoft France until a permanent replacement is appointed.

Haimovich, who led Microsoft Israel for four years, was summoned as part of the probe after the local branch failed to fully disclose how the ministry was using Microsoft systems.

Several managers responsible for internal oversight, compliance, and governance are also leaving their posts.

According to Globes, Microsoft was concerned that Israeli military units were using its systems in ways that were not transparent to global management, violated company terms, and exposed Microsoft to legal and regulatory risks in Europe.  (more...)

America’s Suicide Pact

America oligarchy corporations elites corruption lawlessness impunity depravity Epstein war degeneracy exploitation rape

America’s suicidal march began long before Donald Trump. Trump and the buffoons around him are the inevitable final chapter of the decaying empire.

Civilizations, as the historian Arnold J. Toynbee famously argued, “die from suicide, not by murder.” They collapse from within. They fall prey to moral, social and spiritual decay. They are seized by a parasitic ruling class. Democratic institutions seize up. The citizenry is immiserated, wealth is funneled upwards to the ruling class and coercion is the principle form of control.

Our suicidal march began long before Donald Trump and his bizarre court of buffoons, sycophants, grifters and Christian fascists took power. It began when the ruling class, especially under the Reagan and Clinton administrations, set out to harvest the country and empire for personal profit.

There is a word for these people. Traitors.

These traitors, ensconced in the leadership of the two ruling parties, stripped us of assets and power slowly. They used subterfuge, lies and legalized bribery. They pretended to honor electoral politics, checks and balances, a free press and the rule of law while subverting all of these democratic pillars. That old system, however flawed, was hollowed out. It was turned over to the amoral and the idiotic — look at the Supreme Court or Congress — those willing to do the bidding of the billionaire class.

Armed with billions by the mortal enemy of the demos — the oligarchs and corporations — the political elites, Republicans and Democrats, destroyed the careers of those politicians who resisted. They crushed labor unions. They blacklisted honest journalists and consolidated the press into the hands of a handful of corporations and oligarchs. They slashed regulations that constrained unfettered greed and protected the population from predatory corporations and environmental toxins. They passed legislation that created a de facto tax boycott for the rich — Trump famously paid no federal income taxes in 10 of the 15 years prior to his presidency — while stripping the country of its industry and throwing some 30 million people out of work. Wealth is no longer created by producing or manufacturing. It is created by manipulating the prices of stocks and commodities and imposing a crippling debt peonage on the public.

These parasites cut or abolished social programs, militarized the police, built the largest prison system in the world and pumped funds into a bloated and out-of-control war industry. German socialist and politician Karl Liebknecht, on the eve of the suicidal folly of World War I, called German imperialists “the enemy at home.” Our rulers, our enemies at home, mounted a series of futile wars that degraded the empire’s global hegemony and poured trillions of dollars of taxpayer money into their bank accounts. Iran is the most recent example.  (more...)

Quebec Munitions Expansion Raises Questions Over Supply Chains Linked to the IDF

Canada Quebec Salaberry-de-Valleyfield General Dynamics unaccountability IDF arms exports supply chain artillery shells genocide complicity

The planned expansion of the General Dynamics facility in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield has drawn criticism over public-health risks and concerns that its products may ultimately support operations by the Israel Defense Forces through US supply chains.

The planned $682-million expansion of a General Dynamics ordnance and tactical systems facility in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield is drawing mounting criticism from environmental groups, public-health advocates, and arms-control campaigners concerned about both its local impact and its role in international defence supply chains.

Funded entirely by the U.S. military, the expansion would dramatically increase the plant’s production capacity for artillery propellant used in 155 mm shells from roughly six million pounds to as much as 16 million pounds annually.

The proposed increase comes amid growing scrutiny of how Canadian-based defence manufacturing feeds into U.S. procurement systems and the extent to which those supply chains are later connected to conflicts abroad, including Israel’s war in Gaza.

Since the October 2025 ceasefire, more than 750 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Canada has required permits for military exports under the Export and Import Permits Act since 1947, but transfers to the United States have long been treated differently because of the two countries’ deeply integrated defence industries.

For decades, Canadian-made military components shipped to the U.S. entered American procurement systems with reduced reporting requirements and limited downstream tracking compared with exports to other countries.

While Canada strengthened its legal export-risk assessment regime after implementing the Arms Trade Treaty in 2019, transfers to the United States still operate under a special framework reflecting the scale of cross-border defence cooperation.

Critics say this arrangement creates what has been called the “U.S. loophole” because once Canadian-made components enter U.S. military supply chains, they can be incorporated into weapons systems later transferred abroad without Canada conducting end-use verification of their final destination. In practice, this means Ottawa may approve exports to the United States even when it may be required to deny a direct transfer to another country under its human-rights risk-assessment rules.  (more...)

These American Weapons Used In Iran Are Partially Made In Canada

Canada weapons manufacture Iran war aggression unaccountability war crimes complicity

‘Despite all of that talk, Carney’s actual agenda is about moving Canada closer and closer to the U.S. militarily.’

At least six companies in Canada are currently manufacturing, maintaining or producing components for the same types of weaponry and military assets that the U.S. has used in its war on Iran, an investigation by The Maple has found.

Five of the companies — Raytheon, Boeing, Standard Aero, Northrop Grumman and General Atomics — are subsidiaries or branches of American firms. One of the companies, M1 Composites Technology, has its headquarters in Canada.

These companies produce for the U.S. government components for Tomahawk missiles and MQ-9A Reaper drones, landing gear for fighter jets, nose radomes for bomber jets, and other components, artillery, and accessories for the types of weapons and aircraft being used in the current war.

The total value of the contracts analyzed by The Maple that implicate Canadian facilities is $5.2 billion U.S., or $7 billion Canadian. Most of the contracts stipulate that a majority of the work must be completed in the United States, with 2.5 per cent or less being completed in Canada.

In individual cases, as little as 0.01 per cent and as much as 99 per cent of the work is taking place in Canada.  (more..)

US tech giants lobbied EU to hide datacenter pollution data

technology environmental impact data centers secrecy censorship pollution

Microsoft and other American technology corporations successfully pushed the EU to adopt a confidentiality clause that blocks public access to environmental data from individual datacentres.

Microsoft and other US tech giants have effectively lobbied the EU to obscure the environmental impact of their data centers, with their demands to keep sustainability metrics out of public view written almost word for word into EU rules, The Guardian reported, citing an investigation.

The secrecy provision, which the European Commission added to its proposal nearly word-for-word following industry lobbying in 2024, prevents scrutiny of pollution emitted by individual datacenters. Researchers are left with only national-level summaries of energy consumption rather than facility-specific data.

The rapid expansion of AI chatbots has fueled a construction boom in chip-filled warehouses that consume massive amounts of electricity. A portion of that power demand is being satisfied by burning fossil gas.

Legal experts have raised concerns that the blanket confidentiality clause may violate EU transparency regulations and the Aarhus Convention, an international treaty guaranteeing public access to environmental information.  (more...)

Why Did So Many Canadians Keep Doing Business with Epstein?

Canada Epstein silence indifference self interest amorality exploitation

The predator’s network reached into this country’s financial, science, and cultural elite

Last month, Prime Minister Mark Carney called for the removal of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor—formerly known as Prince Andrew—from the line of succession.

Mountbatten-Windsor had been arrested in the United Kingdom amid mounting scrutiny of his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier who operated, according to prosecutors and investigators, as a kind of ultra high-end pimp. Court filings and investigative reporting indicate Epstein not only sought out sexual encounters for himself but traded access to underage girls in exchange for connections, favours, and patronage.

But Canada could have spoken out about Mountbatten-Windsor long ago. His ties to Epstein had been a global scandal for years. Virginia Giuffre’s allegation that she had been trafficked to the prince as a teen first emerged in Florida court documents in 2014. By 2022, the queen had stripped Mountbatten-Windsor of various titles.

It’s worth asking why we didn’t. Why didn’t we act when the right path was clear but not quite so easy? The question is not merely about reputational risk to the Canadian Crown. Epstein’s world-spanning web of financial, political, and academic elite included other Canadians too. Why did they, like so many others around the world, continue to be active parts of his transnational network—years after his crimes were no longer a secret?  (more...)

This company used to make weapons for the Nazis. Now it will do the same for Israel

Germany Volkswagen Rafael Iron Dome technology militarization economy Nazi

Volkswagen is planning to convert one of its factories to produce Iron Dome components

One of Germany’s biggest and most iconic car manufacturers, Volkswagen (VW) and one of Israel’s most well-known arms manufacturers, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, part of the global Rafael Group, are planning to collaborate. If the project is realized, VW will convert one of its German factories in the historic city of Osnabrueck from making automobiles to producing components of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.

There are good reasons why this has raised eyebrows. For one thing, it reflects not only VW’s growing problems, but those of Germany’s vital automobile sector and the German economy as a whole. As the Financial Times has noted, the VW-Rafael project would mark “the highest-profile example yet of the German car industry, where profits have plunged,” trying to save itself by entering the “booming defense sector.”

These plunging profits are due to many factors: Chinese competition; Germany’s failure to keep up with cutting-edge technology, communication infrastructure, and business practices; American sabotage by tariff warfare and filching German companies via subsidies; and last but not least, the horrendous energy costs that the entire EU has inflicted on itself by going to war – by Ukrainian proxy and sanctions – against Russia.

The shift to making things for the military, meanwhile, is just a small part of Germany’s breathtakingly misguided response: Namely, a policy of going into massive public debt – under a so-called conservative – to finance a bizarre form of military Keynesianism that is based on illusions (no, Russia is not about to attack), produces self-reinforcing Russophobia (which makes a return to normality even harder), and won’t work as an economic boost, as even the usually government-aligned Spiegel has admitted.

In short, like a prism, the Osnabrueck plan bundles together many of Germany’s worst – and self-inflicted – problems, and the single silliest idea of how to tackle them.  (more...)

North Country Business Products Breached: 2,680 POS Terminals Disabled Nationwide

Handala Hack security breach terminals disabled POS technology internet disruption

It was a quiet night; but for hundreds of stores across America, it marked the start of a harsh awakening.

In a single moment, everything changed with our attack on North Country Business Products, Inc., a company trusted by many major retail chains. That trust has now become a symbol of vulnerability.

As a result of this operation, 110 companies and retail chains across the United States, all reliant on North Country’s POS systems, were completely taken offline. In total, 2,680 point-of-sale terminals (POS) went dark in the blink of an eye, bringing business in hundreds of stores to a standstill. Managers and staff were left confused and anxious, while the supply chain—once running smoothly, suddenly fell apart.

We, Handala Hack, have proven that even the largest and most reputable technology providers are not safe. This is just a warning; no business should consider itself immune.

A full list of affected stores is attached to this message, so everyone can witness how fragile digital security really is.  (more...)
