Former Niagara teacher sexually exploited young student

The smell of a submarine sandwich or the whiff of Earl Grey tea fills her with horror.

"My senses are completely overwhelmed by panic," the young woman said in Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharines.

Her high school teacher, Hans Unruh, had Subway and tea for lunch every day at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School. He also groomed the then-16-year-old and engaged in a sexual relationship with her for several years.

Now 24, the young woman, whose name is being withheld to protect her identity, read her victim impact statement in court Friday at the sentencing hearing for her former teacher.

"It has affected my whole world in so many ways."

She said her relationships with men and figures of authority are "strained by the trauma I have experienced."

Being in a school setting makes her physically ill, and she often avoids returning to Niagara to visit with friends and family.

She was hospitalized for six months in 2016 after she attempted to take her life.

"Who would I be today if he hadn't chosen me as a victim?" she asked.  (more...)
