Teacher facing sex assault charges after incidents at Terwillegar rec centre

EDMONTON - A man facing charges after allegedly touching two preteen girls who swam by him at a southwest recreation centre has been suspended from his job as a teacher with Edmonton Public Schools.

Christopher Herodek, 48, has been charged with two counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference, the Edmonton Police Service said Friday.

The charges come after separate incidents involving two victims Dec. 22 and Dec. 23 in the lazy river at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.

Scott Pattison, a spokesman for EPS, said a “very observant” lifeguard noticed a man wearing goggles looking at girls underwater.

“There was peculiar activity going on,” Pattison said.

Police were called following the Dec. 23 incident and were then advised of a similar incident that took place the previous day.

Pattison said contact information for the first victim had been recorded. Evidence from both victims, combined with surveillance video, led police to the suspect.  (more...)
