A Toronto private school teacher has pleaded guilty to sex-related offences involving two students but due to a court order, neither the teacher's name nor that of the school he worked at can be reported.

CBC and The Globe and Mail challenged the publication ban on Thursday. The Ontario court judge, Justice James Chaffe, will make a decision later this month.

Issued in February in order to protect the identities of the victims, it also prevents the publication of the teacher's name and former school.

"It's outrageous. A publication ban on an accused name is rare and extraordinary. The public is entitled to know the names of individuals who've been charged criminally, especially some one who has been convicted of sex offences," said Iain MacKinnon, the lawyer representing CBC and The Globe and Mail.

The male teacher, 43, was found guilty Thursday of sexual interference, sexual exploitation and making child pornography.

The victims, aged 14 and 16 at the time of the crimes, were both in court and read victim impact statements.  (more...)

OTTAWA — The Senate ethics officer says a Toronto-area senator broke the chamber’s code of conduct when he used the “weight, prestige and notability of his office” to have a sexual relationship with a “vulnerable” teenager.

In a long-awaited report released Thursday, Lyse Ricard said Don Meredith didn’t uphold the “highest standards of dignity inherent to the position of senator” and acted in a way that could damage the Senate itself.

The report found Meredith used his Senate cell phone for explicit chats, tried to help the woman land an internship on Parliament Hill, said he would appoint her to a committee looking at building a memorial to the first black soldier to receive the Victoria Cross, and seeing if he could help with her mother’s permanent residency file.

“Senator Meredith brought into the relationship the power and influence of the office of senator, while Ms. M was a vulnerable teenager,” Ricard wrote in her, at times, blistering critique.

“That dynamic pervaded the entire relationship, from the time it was initiated through to when it became sexual.”  (more...)

One thing the American government has not done is to prosecute the largest banks in the world for supporting the drug cartels by washing billions of dollars of their blood stained money. As Narco sphere journalist Bill Conroy has observed banks are ”where the money is” in the global drug war.

HSBC, Western Union, Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase&Co, Citigroup, Wachovia amongst many others have allegedly failed to comply with American anti-money laundering (AML) laws.

The Mexican drug cartels have caught the headlines again and again due to their murderous activities. The war between the different drug cartels and the war between the cartels and government security forces has spilled the blood of tens of thousands of innocent people. The drug cartels would find it much harder to profit from their murderous activity if they didn’t have too big to fail banks willing to wash their dirty money.  (more...)

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland knew for more than two decades that her maternal Ukrainian grandfather was the chief editor of a Nazi newspaper in occupied Poland that vilified Jews during the Second World War.

Ms. Freeland’s family history has become a target for Russian forces seeking to discredit one of Canada’s highly placed defenders of Ukraine.

Ms. Freeland, who has paid tribute to her maternal grandparents in articles and books, helped edit a scholarly article in the Journal of Ukrainian Studies in 1996 that revealed her grandfather, Michael Chomiak, was a Nazi propagandist for Krakivski Visti (Krakow News).

Krakivski Visti was set up in 1940 by the German army and supervised by German intelligence officer Emil Gassert. Its printing presses and offices were confiscated by the Germans from a Jewish publisher, who was later murdered at the Belzec concentration camp.

The article titled “Kravivski Visti and the Jews, 1943: A contribution of Ukrainian Jewish Relations during the Second World War” was written by Ms. Freeland’s uncle, John-Paul Himka, now professor emeritus at the University of Alberta.

In the foreword to the article, Prof. Himka credits Ms. Freeland for “pointing out problems and clarifications.” Ms. Freeland has never acknowledged that her grandfather was a Nazi collaborator and suggested on Monday that the allegation was part of a Russian disinformation campaign.  (more...)

School Board Gabfest: Public will have say yada yada yada

Trustees with the York Region District School Board have opted to give the residents of Georgina a chance to decide how they want to fill a seat left vacant by the resignation of Nancy Elgie.

The trustees debated the matter at a board meeting Tuesday night in Aurora, with some saying “democracy is expensive” while others said the “board has spent too much money already.” The candidate will fill the Georgina seat that had been held by Elgie since 2000.

“Let me blunt,” said Markham Trustee Susan Geller. “We as a board have spent enough money . . . on travel and legal fees to get a great candidate for the one-year period.”

Many of the trustees preferred a hybrid option of community consultation with Georgina residents to decide if they prefer an appointment to fill the vacancy versus a costly byelection.

“If we have a roomful of people demanding a byelection, then we will know what residents of Georgina want,” said new chair Loralea Carruthers. (more...)

School violence is a crisis, and parents need to speak up

An out-of-control six-year-old in the Peel District School Board is handcuffed by police. Two parents in the Toronto District School Board are suing the board, claiming the board has neglected the safety of their children. The Hamilton Wentworth school board spends $1.6 million dollars on taxis; many of the students in cabs are 'unfit' to ride the bus; but not unfit to go to school. Sam Hammond, president of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario, recently spoke out on the issue of rising student violence that makes the school environment unsafe for their peers and staff.

What is going on?

Unfortunately, this seems to be an issue people don't want to think about, much less discuss. Violent and uncontrollable behaviour of students, especially elementary students, is on the rise. After Hammond's statements, which were widely covered in the media, there was very little response. The Minister of Education did respond with some motherhood statements about safety in schools, but no meaningful response. School boards won't speak, because they don't want to give the impression there are out-of-control students in their schools. Teachers can't speak because they are afraid of punitive reaction from their employers.  (more...)
