BERLIN — Far-right protesters blocked an ambulance from reaching an injured asylum seeker after violent clashes broke out between the two groups in an east German town.

Witnesses in Bautzen described running street battles between teenage asylum seekers throwing bottles and far-right protesters shouting neo-Nazi slogans on Wednesday night.

It took more than 100 police officers to end the violence between around 80 far-right activists and about 20 asylum seekers, at least two of whom were injured.

“This is our Nazi neighbourhood,” one witness described the protesters as chanting.  (more...)

Alberta’s education minister says he’ll reveal his next move Monday in response to two independent religious schools that refused to follow the law on gay-straight alliances.

Expecting a letter promising the schools would form a student support group if a pupil requested one, Education Minister David Eggen’s office instead received a letter from the schools’ lawyer Friday afternoon.

Friday was deadline day for the Baptist Christian Education Society to deliver a written assurance to the minister that its two Edmonton-area schools would comply with last year’s amendments to the School Act. The schools have about 200 students.

School board chairman Pastor Brian Coldwell has lobbied the government to change the law, saying it infringes on Albertans’ religious freedoms. Pushing for a face-to-face meeting with the minister, Coldwell has said Meadows Baptist Academy and Harvest Baptist Academy will not host gay-straight alliances.  (more...)

Canada’s real estate sector at high risk of money laundering, report warns

OTTAWA—An in-depth review of Canada’s anti-money laundering efforts has uncovered serious concerns that organized crime is using the country’s hot real estate sector to illegally funnel cash.

The report from the Paris-based Financial Action Task Force makes special note of real estate as an area of the economy with a high risk of illicit activity, one of a few weak spots in what the report calls a comprehensive federal regime to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

The charitable and life insurance industries are also identified in the report as sectors at risk of providing financial help to terrorists and criminals.

Of particular concern are real estate schemes in which a foreign or domestic criminal provides cash to a local buyer, or more sophisticated schemes where loans and mortgages are combined with lawyers’ trust accounts to move money around quietly.  (more...)

This may come as a surprise to your average Canadian, but Canada is a haven for tax fraud. Transparency International released a report this week, judging the effectiveness of the commitments made at the London Anti-Corruption Summit in the spring. The report was a little dry, but an interesting thing was revealed – Canada made no commitment to start punishing professional enablers of fraud. In fact, they noted all of the commitments Canada made were “not new”.

Does it seem odd that we would send people to say we’re not cracking down on enablers of fraud? Well it shouldn’t. Canada has actively promoted itself as an entry to lower tax jurisdictions for decades. Unfortunately, the opaque banking system we created to allow this also attracts fraudsters. By turning a blind eye to international tax fraud, regular Canadians are starting to pay the price of these crimes with their homes.

One of the worst kept secrets in the business world is that Canada is a massive tax haven. We’re one of the few countries in the world where people pay more in taxes than companies. As interesting as that is, that’s not the reason it’s so attractive up here. The real reason is, unlike in the US, we don’t charge taxes on earnings of foreign subsidiaries.  (more...)

Toronto chess teacher charged in sex assault on girl, 10

TORONTO - A former chemical weapons inspector who teaches chess to kids in Scarborough is accused of sexually assaulting a young girl.

Toronto Police say a sexual interference investigation was launched after an alleged incident last Saturday involving an instructor and a 10-year-old student at the Philip Math Chess Academy on McNicoll Ave., just east of Victoria Park Ave.

“The girl was only registered in the class for a short period time,” Det.-Const. Julia Brown said Thursday. “She had two classes with the accused.”

She said the alleged incident happened during class hours.

“The girl told her parents what happened a couple of days later and they contacted police,” Brown said.

Erwin Casareno, 55, of Toronto, was arrested Wednesday. He is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching.  (more...)

Third sex assault charge for former Ottawa music teacher

A former Ottawa music teacher faces an additional sexual assault charge after police investigated new allegations against the man, who now lives in Brantford.

Jose Hernandez, 70, faces two previous sexual assault charges following allegations he inappropriately touched two of his students while teaching at a private music studio in Ottawa. The Ottawa police’s sexual assault and child abuse section says Hernandez now faces a third charge after a third victim was identified.

The investigation looked into allegations against the accused between 2010 and 2016. The first complaint was laid in May, which led investigators to identify a second victim. Hernandez was charged with one count of sexual assault on July 19 and a second count on Aug. 16.

2 more gross indecency charges laid against former Ottawa teacher

A former Ottawa teacher now faces 10 historical sexual assault charges involving seven victims after police laid two new gross indecency charges Tuesday.

The new charges against Robert Clarke, 72, of Morrisburg, Ont., involve alleged offences against two people that happened between 1973 and 1992 while Clarke was performing his teaching duties, Ottawa police said.

Police first charged Clarke with one count of sexual assault in June 2016  after one of his former students said that he was inappropriately touched while Clarke was a teacher with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board in the 1980s.

In July, police laid two additional charges of sexual assault, four charges of gross indecency, and one charge of sexual exploitation against Clarke after four more people came forward.  (more...)
