Former OSCVI teacher jailed for sex offence

OWEN SOUND - Retired OSCVI teacher and basketball coach Gene Cassidy was sentenced to eight months in jail, with a recommendation that he serve it in protective custody, for his sexual exploitation of a former student.

Superior Court Justice Clayton Conlan delivered his sentence Friday after accepting the 60-year-old Owen Sound resident's guilty plea April 30.

Cassidy admitted that while in a position of trust or authority toward the underaged girl, he touched her with his penis, hands and mouth over a three-year period in Owen Sound and elsewhere in Ontario.

A publication ban prohibits publishing details that would identify the victim.

That young woman was in the courtroom among a group of people who supported her, while Cassidy, members of his family and some friends and colleagues sat near him. No one from either side wanted to comment to reporters after the judge's decision.

The criminal charges are dealt with but a civil law suit has yet to be heard.  (more...)
