Vertical development clouds TDSB school closure issue

Packed portables. Kids in closets. Staff rooms filled with students.

While a debate rages about which of Toronto’s most underpopulated schools should be closed, other schools are so full that neighbourhood newcomers are being denied spots.

“We have situations where there are kids living in highrises who look out their windows at a school, then they have to get on a bus and go to a school several kilometres away,” said Councillor John Filion (Ward 23, Willowdale). “That’s just not right.”

While 131 TDSB schools — roughly one in five — are considered less than 60 per cent full, 147 others have utilization rates of 100 per cent or higher.

Some 31 are operating at 130 per cent capacity or more. Topping the list is Avondale Public School, near Yonge St. and Sheppard Ave., with 257 per cent utilization. According to TDSB projections, that number will soar to 353 per cent by 2019.  (more...)
