Every time any attempt is made to bring public spending at the Toronto school board under control, the same inevitable cry from all the usual suspects is made about “government underfunding”.
It happened last week in the debate over selling surplus schools in order to make a dent in the board’s $3-billion maintenance and repair backlog.
The problem is the board, ideologically opposed to selling any public sector assets, as are its labour unions, has allowed a bad situation to turn into a crisis through its own incompetence.
Because it wastes so much money maintaining half-empty and near-empty schools, there isn’t enough money to do proper maintenance and repairs right across the system.
Making a bad situation worse, when routine repairs and capital improvements are made, the price-tag is outrageous, ranging from $143 to screw in a pencil sharpener to $3,000 to install an electrical outlet. (more...)
There is never a lack of money for this:
