There’s too much Canada, not too little

Canada foreign influence NATO IMF World Bank military mining ambition UN

A kid that already has handfuls of candies wants to take another whack at the piñata before others have had their first turn. That about sums up the foreign minister’s position on Canadian power in international affairs.

Canada needs greater international influence, according to Melanie Joly. While the Foreign Affairs Minister’s recent comment elicited some commentary, no one has mentioned the inegalitarian, even supremacist, nature of her position.

In “‘We need to increase our influence’: Joly wants to increase Canada’s impact on the world stage”, CTV quoted the minister saying, “What we’re seeing is that the world’s power structures are moving, and therefore we need to be there to defend our interests without compromising our values, and we need to increase our influence.”

But, by almost every important measure Canada has outsized influence over global affairs.

A member of the G7, Canada joined the US and Britain in instigating NATO and the Bretton Woods institutions (International Monetary Fund and World Bank). Eight decades later Canada’s voting share within the multilateral financial institutions is five times its share of the global population and Canada has participated in every major NATO deployment. It currently leads one of four NATO battle groups in eastern Europe on Russia’s doorstep.

According to the Department of National Defence, Canadian troops are deployed on two dozen international missions. Canadian Forces also has bases in Jamaica, Kuwait and Germany, which gives this country more international bases than far larger countries such as China and India.

Canada has long ranked among the world’s top military spenders. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Ottawa spent more on its military than all but 12 countries in 2020. It is one of only five members of NATO, note Royal Military College professors Christian Leuprecht and Joel Sokolsky, with a “full-spectrum military”. Canada far outspends its proportion of the global population. With less than 0.5 percent of the world’s people, Canada is responsible for 1.5% of international military spending.  (more...)

Far Right Finnish Economy Minister Resigns Over Hitler Remarks

Finland economy minister Vilhelm Junnila Hitler foot in mouth resignation Nazi far right 88 dog whistle ultranationalism

Finland’s Economy Minister has resigned after just ten days in the post after video of him speaking fondly of Adolf Hitler was uncovered earlier this week.

Vilhelm Junnila of the ultranationalist Finns Party said on Friday that he was stepping down so as not to harm the reputation of both the government and Finland.

“I see that it is impossible for me to continue as a minister in a satisfactory way,” Junnila said in a statement.

His resignation came shortly after he posted an apology on Facebook for remarks he labeled “stupid and childish.”

Speaking at a meeting in the city of Turku in 2019, Junnila noted with satisfaction that his local party chairman’s election number was “88” — code among neo-Nazis for the letters “HH”, signifying the greeting “Heil Hitler.”

Then, in March this year,  Junnila congratulated another candidate who received the same number at a Finns campaign event, according to the Finnish broadcaster Yle.

“First of all, congratulations on an excellent election number. I know it is a winning card. This 88 refers, of course, to the two ‘H’s, but let’s not dwell on that,” the 41-year-old Junnila is said to have joked.  (more...)

Netflix Exposes the Secret Gay History of Nazi Germany

Germany Nazi Berlin gay agenda homosexuality decadence degeneracy depravity history hypocrisy

Netflix doc Eldorado: Everything the Nazis Hate examines the swinging LGBTQ haven in Berlin that was ultimately destroyed by the Nazis

THE ELDORADO, THE swinging, anything-goes nightspot that gives the new Netflix documentary Eldorado its name, was an LGBTQ haven during Germany’s Weimar Republic, popular among Berlin’s trans population and anyone else who liked to let their hair down in public. It was also, as the film’s subtitle puts it, Everything the Nazis Hate. Which didn’t stop burly Hitler confidante and head of the Nazi SA paramilitary wing Ernst Röhm, a not-terribly-closeted gay man, from frequenting the establishment. As the film explains, the SA had a strong homoerotic element, a disgust with women and femininity they somehow used to justify homosexuality – for a time, anyway. At a certain point, Röhm’s friendship with Hitler could only take him so far in a Nazi regime increasingly set on eradicating homosexuality.

Röhm is but one player in this concise, deftly told doc that uses the Eldorado as a launching pad into a broader story about being gay in Nazi Germany. It’s a tale of wild nights, forbidden relationships, and, eventually, horrible consequences, a decadent scene leading to a nightmare conclusion. The film never comes out and yells it, but it is also a reminder of the Final Solution tenor that still accompanies much anti-gay and anti-trans rhetoric and, increasingly, policy.

Some of this material has been covered in the 2000 documentary Paragraph 175, named for the provision of the German Penal Code that made sexual relations between males a crime (it wasn’t repealed until 1994). And of course, there’s always Cabaret. But directors Benjamin Cantu and Matt Lambert still find plenty of ways to make Eldorado feel fresh.  (more...)
