Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe has asked a retired senior judge to review Scotland Yard’s beleaguered investigations into historic sex abuse cases.
Britain’s most senior police officer has brought in a former High Court judge to look into how recent inquiries – including those into Lord Bramall, the former head of the Army, and Lord Brittan, the late Cabinet minister – have been handled.
However, the report’s conclusions will remain “private” and only key findings will be published, Sir Bernard said.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner also indicated the review would look at how the force can “balance … the interests of suspects” – amid widespread criticism that the lives of public figures have been besmirched by untrue allegations.
The appointment of Sir Richard Henriques to conduct a lengthy review will be seen as a way for Scotland Yard to dismiss pressure to close down its controversial Operation Midland inquiry.
Scotland Yard confirmed the investigation will remain open despite the ongoing review.
Midland, which has looked at allegations of child sex abuse against a range of prominent politicians and other public figures, will be part of the judge’s review. (more...)
