ETFO mulls election strategy

ELEMENTARY TEACHERS’ FEDERATION OF ONTARIO (ETFO) PRESIDENT SAM HAMMOND SPEAKS TO MEDIA

TORONTO -- The grand poobah of the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) -- easily the most powerful teachers' union in the province -- said Wednesday he's hoping this school year will be a much different one than last year.

"I can't think of anyone who wants to go through what we went through last year," ETFO president Sam Hammond told me during a break in the annual ETFO conference. "Certainly parents don't want that, my members don't want that.

"We will do everything we can to avoid that kind of situation."

Could that mean the militant Hammond and his 76,000 members will take a break this year from their protests, their work-to-rule campaigns, their refusal to engage in extracurricular activities and their focus on Picketing 101 to do what they are paid very generously to do -- that is, teach kids.  (more...)
