Pedro Sanchez accused the Israeli government of ‘violating the principles and values of the EU,’ stressing that Tel Aviv ‘cannot be our partner’

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on 19 April that his government will formally propose that the EU suspend its Association Agreement with Israel.

“A government that violates international law and, therefore, the principles and values of the EU cannot be our partner,” Sanchez said, speaking at a PSOE rally in the province of Huelva.

“This Tuesday, the Government of Spain will take to Europe the proposal that the EU sever its association with Israel,” he stressed.

Sanchez was careful to say that Spain’s stance is directed against the Israeli government and its policies, and not its citizens, saying, "We are a people friendly to Israel.” He also called on other European nations to back the initiative.  (more...)
