Pope Leo XIV emerges as powerful critic of Trump's war on Iran

Catholic Pope Leo XIV Trump Iran criticism unjust war morality

Pope Leo XIV, the first American born pope, has emerged as a powerful critic of the US-Israeli war on Iran, directly condemning Donald Trump's threats against the Iranian people as "truly unacceptable" and welcoming the two-week ceasefire as a step toward negotiation.

Pope Leo XIV has become one of the most prominent voices opposing the US-Israeli war on Iran over the past several weeks. His stance has placed him in direct opposition to the Trump administration's policies.

The pontiff expressed "great satisfaction" on Wednesday after learning of a tentative two-week truce. His positive reaction followed an unusual public rebuke of Donald Trump's threats against Iran.

Trump had warned Iran on Tuesday that "a whole civilization will die tonight" unless Tehran complied with US demands. The pope told reporters this threat was "truly unacceptable," a rare instance of a pontiff directly challenging a world leader.

"In light of these past hours of great tension for the Middle East and for the whole world, I welcome with satisfaction the announcement of an immediate two-week truce," Leo said during his weekly audience. He added that negotiations are the only path to ending the war.

His statement came just hours after he condemned Trump's warning about destroying "a whole civilization" if Iran refused to make a deal.

"There was this threat against the entire people of Iran, and this is truly unacceptable," the pope said. He noted that while international law is relevant, the deeper issue is a moral question concerning the wellbeing of people everywhere.

Leo made an unusual appeal to ordinary citizens. "I would invite the citizens of all the countries involved to contact the authorities, political leaders, congressmen, to ask them to work for peace," he said. (more...)
