Words and arms that's all I kept thinking. Why? Why wouldn't you just tell Scotiabank that you're not comfortable with their involvement in a genocide. In their crimes against humanity. In having your prize tainted by a bank that profits off the bodies of dead Palestinians? Well that's because your executive director doesn't think any of those things. Despite a groundswell of pushback and protests against the Giller prize being involved with Scotiabank, Elana Rabinovitch, has doubled down on her support for Israel's crimes and regurgitates some of the most vile and vapid Israeli talking points, all to mar a once beloved literary organisation. The scene outside of the protest was at times comical, as car after car came and dropped off people who either averted their eyes or deafened their ears to the sounds of the protesters. Silence. Silence is complicity despite what writer Ian Williams is touring around Canada telling people. Silence kills.
