Doc fondled me at Sick Kids in '60s, woman tells trial

TORONTO - A 66-year-old woman testified Tuesday that a young doctor fondled her 50 years ago in a bed at Sick Kids hospital.

The woman told a Toronto court Dr. Arturo Sanchez was touching her genitals in a darkened room in 1964 or 1965 when a nurse opened the curtains and inquired: “What’s going on?”

The witness, who cannot be identified due to a publication ban, said Sanchez ordered the nurse to retrieve a medical scope.

The woman testified that when the nurse went to retrieve the scope, Sanchez immediately left. When the nurse returned, the patient, who was treated at the hospital for a urinary tract infection on different occasions in 1964-65, was alone in the room, court heard.

Sanchez worked in the hospital as a resident and would often visit and touch the patient during her hospital stays, Crown attorney Karen Simone said in her opening statement to Justice Nancy Backhouse in the judge-alone trial.

The witness, who became a widow last year, testified that on earlier occasions Sanchez inappropriately touched her, including on her 15th birthday during the summer of 1964.  (more...)
