School staffer's liaison with teen leads to jail

A 36-year-old former employee at a Flin Flon school has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old student.

Kristina Richelle Lies offered a tearful apology during a court appearance in The Pas Thursday.

"I want you to know of my deep regret. It was never my intention to end up in a situation where this hurt would be caused," said Lies. "It's been a lesson of great teaching to me."

Lies pleaded guilty to sexual interference after the Crown dropped two additional charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

RCMP arrested Lies in August 2013 after another teen in the community contacted them. Lies, who had worked for three years as a parent-child co-ordinator at Ruth Betts Community School, was immediately suspended and later fired.  (more...)
