Preliminary hearing set for professor facing child exploitation charges

A preliminary hearing has been set for University of Toronto professor and former deputy minister of education Benjamin Levin on seven counts of child exploitation.

The hearing, scheduled for three days in November, will determine if the Crown has enough evidence against Levin for the matter to proceed to trial.

Levin was charged in July 2013 with possessing, accessing and distributing child pornography and released on $100,000 bail.

He is a tenured professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at U of T and was named a member of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s transition team in January 2013. After the charges were laid, the university announced that Levin would cease all research and teaching duties.
