A Wilderness of Mirrors

Former head of CIA counterintelligence and infamous spymaster, James Jesus Angleton, once described the Cold War world of espionage and intrigue as a “wilderness of mirrors.”

As more and more of the clerical abuse scandal is revealed, and layers of conspiracy and confusion are peeled away, many Catholics may feel as though they are walking around in their own wilderness of mirrors, a mess of doubt and confusion in which no one can be trusted.

Such a conspiratorial mindset is not unjustified, for it is apparent that there is more to the story than simply another round of liberal prelates being exposed as enablers to vicious sex offenders (although that reading of the story certainly is true). The conspiracy recently reached a new level of interesting in The American Spectator’s George Neumayr’s revelation that Cardinal Wuerl has recruited Barrack Obama’s former head of Secret Service to run cover for the Washington, DC cardinal who is now deluged with scandal.

As Neumayr’s brilliant gumshoe work has revealed, the presence of Obama’s former SS chief, Mark Sullivan, in Wuerl’s entourage seems to point to a deeper collusion between the Democratic Party and the liberal wing of the Catholic Church—something The Remnant suggested last year.

While such a weird alliance is very likely, the alliance between Democrats and liberal Catholic prelates poses an unsettling question: is it possible that there are those who masquerade as conservatives both in and outside the Church who are trying to take advantage of the McCarrick-Wuerl scandal to push a political agenda?

Is this moment of political and ecclesiastical crisis in America a window of opportunity for a certain group of people who have been holed in “the resistance” during in the Trump Era, biding their time and waiting for an opportunity to rear their ugly neoconservative heads? (more...)

Right-wing extremism not welcome in Canadian Armed Forces — but ‘clearly, it’s in here,’ says top soldier

OTTAWA—Canada’s top soldier frankly acknowledges there are members within the Canadian Armed Forces who harbour right-wing extremist and white supremacist beliefs.

It’s obvious Gen. Jonathan Vance has given the issue much thought.

“Clearly it’s in here,” Vance told the Star.

Over a 40-minute interview at National Defence Headquarters, Vance repeatedly stressed that nobody holding extremist beliefs is welcome in the Canadian Forces.

But despite pre-recruitment screening, despite the statements about defence ethics, and despite his vow that extremism will not be tolerated, Vance said it would be “foolish” to suggest right-wing extremists “don’t get in.”

“There’s no question about it that I cannot guarantee they don’t get in,” Vance said.  (more...)

If any author in the Western canon demands a trigger warning these days, it is Friedrich Nietzsche.

A growing chorus of worriers has lately made this point about the 19th century German philosopher. They warn that the often ignored “bad” Nietzsche, the “godfather of fascism,” has returned as an inspiration for current politics. They point, for example, to the American white nationalist Richard Spencer, who has said Nietzsche “red-pilled” him, or opened his eyes to the hidden structure of the world.

More ominous is Steve Bannon, the former Donald Trump advisor and leading thinker of the alt-right, whose explicit goal of destroying the modern liberal egalitarian order with a kind of cleansing chaos is nothing if not Nietzschean.

But what to do about this in the classroom is a matter of debate. Some, like the psychologist Steven Pinker, have suggested the more extreme no-platforming solution of blacklisting Nietzsche and his “repellent” writings, as was also done to Bannon at the recent New Yorker ideas festival, leading to similar calls to cancel his November Munk Debate in Toronto. Others prefer more subtle warnings and contextualizations.

Regardless, there is broad agreement that universities cannot simply keep teaching Nietzsche as they traditionally have, as the forerunner of postmodernism and, therefore, an intellectual ally of the progressive left. He is not that and never was, according to Ronald Beiner, chair of political science at the University of Toronto Mississauga and author of the new book Dangerous Minds: Nietzsche, Heidegger, and the Return of the Far Right.  (more...)

Rise of right-wing extremists presents new challenge for Canadian law enforcement agencies

OTTAWA—There has been a dramatic rise in the number of white nationalist and right-wing extremist groups operating in Canada over the last three years, causing police and security agencies to reassess the threat the movement poses.

But more worrying, for those who keep tabs on Canada’s extreme right fringe, is that alliances seem to be building between groups as the far-right makes gains in the United States and Europe. At the same time, it’s not clear that Canada’s law-enforcement and security agencies are mounting a similarly concerted response.

Between 2015 and 2018, researcher Barbara Perry said she’s observed a 20 to 25 per cent jump in the number of right-wing extremist groups active in Canada. Based on Perry’s previous estimates, that would mean anywhere between 100 to 125 active right-wing extremist groups operating from coast to coast.

Perry, who researches hate crimes and the far right at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, attributed the growth to far-right causes and ideas infiltrating mainstream politics in Canada and other Western countries.  (more...)

I just read an amazing book!

The book was written by close friends of Pierre Trudeau, the deceased father of Prime Minister Jusitn Trudeau is titled, ”Young Trudeau: Son of Quebec, Father of Canada, 1919-1944”

The authors, Max and Monique Nemni were close friends of Pierre Trudeau and described him as,  fascist, anti-Semite, and separatist.

The book contains a number of quite revealing quotes directly from Pierre Trudeau (P.E.T.).  They are revealing in that these quotes explain a great deal about how P.E.T. thought about a number of subjects that, I suspect the Liberal party and the Liberal media actually have had a heavy hand in concealing.

There is little doubt that the senior Trudeau’s thoughts were created by his own father (Charles-Émile Trudeau, was a lawyer who later became a millionaire businessman) and Pierre’s privileged of an exclusive Jesuit education.

Pierre Trudeau’s pride was his father who died while P.E.T. was a teenager.  P.E.T., derived in large part from his admiration of Charlie’s success in business, a field from which francophones were largely absent in the early 20th century.  He also derived a rich wealth by way of inheritance.  (more...)

German parliamentary debates tend to be well-tempered, often dreary affairs. But a recent session showed just how tense the climate in Germany's parliament, the Bundestag, has become.

Earlier this month, Alexander Gauland, a lawmaker with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the lower house of parliament, lambasted German Chancellor Angela Merkel's migration policies. A verbal pile-on ensued. Senior Social Democratic politician Martin Schulz accused the AfD legislator of being a "right-wing radical" and using "tactics of fascism."

Eventually, the 94 AfD members of parliament walked out, saying that comparisons to the Nazis and other insults were "unacceptable."

In last September's elections, the AfD became the first far-right party to win seats in the Bundestag in more than half a century, becoming the official opposition to Merkel's ruling "grand coalition" of conservatives and social democrats. Although — or precisely because — the AfD is treated as a pariah in the legislature, its support is growing among German voters.

The AfD was listed as the country's second most popular party in a recent poll, with 18 percent support, beating the mainstream Social Democratic Party into third place, albeit by just a single point.

It is the latest sign that many citizens are drawn to a populist movement that is reshaping politics in Germany, a trend that's playing out in Europe and elsewhere. AfD politicians are regularly accused of extremism and don't shy from the type of nationalist rhetoric that mainstream German politicians largely have shunned since World War II.  (more...)

Child poverty plagues every corner of Toronto, census data shows

Upwards of 125,000 Toronto children — more than one in four — are growing up in poverty, a problem that plagues pockets of every city ward, says a new report being released by Social Planning Toronto on Monday.

It is a disturbing reality all candidates vying for office in the Oct. 22 municipal election need to address, says the advocacy organization in its sixth annual report.

“Toronto is a city of great wealth and prosperity,” report says. “We can do better and … we must do better.”

With an overall poverty rate of 26.3 per cent, the city maintains its dubious status as the child poverty capital of Canada, said Peter Clutterbuck, the organization’s acting executive director.

“But there’s no question, poverty gets a bit more hidden in the larger 25-ward structure,” he said of the provincial government’s bombshell move to cut the city’s 47 wards to 25 midway through the municipal campaign.  (more...)
