Last month, in a Gatineau, Que., hotel hosting the annual general meeting of the Canadian Federation of Students, delegates looked out the window to behold a throng of student protesters gathering on the front sidewalk.

It is usually the Canadian Federation of Students’ job to marshal student protests, not to endure them. But that day, more than 50 students clutching lobster traps and signs reading “Canadian Federation of Suing” were gathered outside to vent their frustrations at a body they alleged had calcified into a conniving, amoral organization bent on hanging onto its disillusioned membership at all costs.

“They’re like a creepy ex-boyfriend who won’t let it go,” protester Melissa Kate Wheeler told  student journalist Jane Lytvynenko.

As president of the Concordia Student Union, Ms. Wheeler was one of a vocal cadre of student leaders across Canada with Kafkaesque tales of petitioning to leave the Federation, only to be stopped by a years long odyssey of ignored calls, counter-tactics and legal action.

Fr. Gravel lawsuit against LifeSiteNews is still on-going

December 31, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) - To bring our readers up-to-date, although, as we reported on October 29, Quebec Catholic priest Fr. Raymond Gravel has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, his now three-years' long, $500,000 lawsuit against LifeSiteNews is still proceeding.

Fr. Gravel's lawyer has most recently been instructed to initiate a challenge to the detailed defense document that our lawyers presented to the court a few years ago. That document is now a public document since it has been long ago presented to the court and can be seen here. (Note that all references to Campaigne Quebec Vie and specific complaints by Fr. Gravel against items published by that organization are no longer part of the case. That is because of the settlement recently agreed to between that completely separate Quebec pro-life advocacy organization and Fr. Gravel) Note 2: All the references in the defense document to the "Originating Motion" refer to the Gravel lawsuit document.)

We strongly encourage LifeSiteNews supporters to take some time to read this document. This Christmas, we had a guest, a relative who had been attending Augsberg College in Minneapolis. At dinner, she recounted a disturbing college experience.

Somehow she had been placed in a "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Questioning, Other" - dormitory with genderless showers and toilet stalls without locks. Needless to say she was upset and had to endure two weeks at the dorm before being moved.

One group in particular disturbed her. Illustrated with photos from her phone, she told us about students who dressed up as animals. Not only in the dorm but also while attending class. Some of these students dressed in full dog costumes, slept on dog beds, and ate their meals on the floor from dog dishes.

They also wore dog collars with bone medallions around their necks to identify themselves when out of costume. Although she did not go into detail, some of these students also engage in deviant sexual behavior called "yiffing."

When she tried to explain the situation to family back home, her grandmother told her not to be concerned because it was probably something related to the school's team mascot.  (more...)

How Serious Are We About Protecting Our Children?

Any time a politician wants to raise taxes or start some new program the simplest way to gain acceptance is to claim “it’s for the children.”  We all want to be on the side of the children.  At least we want to say we’re on the side of the children.  But what does that mean?  Are we nurturing and raising our children toward a healthy, responsible, happy adulthood?  We can gain some insight into this by looking at the issue of child sexual abuse.

There are 60 million adult survivors of child sexual abuse in the United States today. Some experts report that one in four women and one in six men were sexually abused before they turned 18.  That’s a staggering number.

While some sources report these figures as fact, in reality there is little agreement on the actual numbers of children who are sexually abused every year.  Some experts claim the problem is growing.  Others that it is decreasing.  Regardless, just about everyone agrees that the problem is very serious and involves significant numbers.

One reason there is so little agreement on the size and scope of the problem is that most victims of this kind of abuse never tell anyone about it.  They keep it a secret.   Sometimes they remain silent out of fear, sometimes because of shame or guilt, sometimes it’s because they believe they engaged in the activity willingly and enthusiastically.  Sometimes the victims don’t even know what happened to them.   (more...)

How Serious Are We About Protecting Our Children?

Readers will have to forgive me for sounding angry, but the recent news involving GLAAD has enraged me.  Mark Steyn's most recent piece in National Review sums up some of the worst aspects of the epic saga known as GLAAD v. Duck Dynasty.

Steyn resonates with me on one key point: yes, GLAAD is ridiculous and foolish.  We knew this.  But some conservatives who should know better are truly pathetic.  A National Review editor scolds Steyn for being "puerile," while people on Fox News say that Phil Robertson should have been suspended.  Pusillanimous obeisance to false ideology isn't exclusive to left or right.

A bunch of people on the left called GLAAD out, and I'm glad they did.  Yet a bunch of people on the right are still terrified of GLAAD, or else actually believe that it's defamation to say negative things or think negative thoughts about homosexuality.
