Poll finds majority of Canadians disagree with Olympic boycott over Russian homosexuality laws

TORONTO, September 3, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The idea of a boycott of the 2014 Olympic games in Russia in protest over laws that ban propaganda promoting the homosexual lifestyle.

In a new poll of Canadians by Forum Research, the majority (58%) disagree that Canada should boycott the 2014 Sochi Olympics, while less that one third agree with such an action (32%). One tenth (10%) had no opinion on the issue.

However, a slightly smaller majority (56%) also think Canadian athletes at Sochi should be allowed to show their support for homosexuality by wearing rainbow pins or carrying rainbow flags, an activity forbidden by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The IOC's charter specifically prohibits demonstrations or political propaganda in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas. (Bylaw to Rule 50.)    (more...)

Video series sponsored by Jesuits promotes homosexuality

ROME, September 3, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A series of videos sponsored by the Jesuit Roman Catholic religious order, titled “Who are we to judge,” in reference to a comment made earlier this year by Pope Francis about homosexual priests, has come under fire for promoting the idea that there is no conflict between being a faithful Catholic and being an active homosexual. 

The video series was produced by the Ignatian News Network, a YouTube channel that is a joint project of the US Jesuits and Loyola Productions in Los Angeles, to feature videos about the work and mission of the American Jesuits. 

Prominently featured in the series is Arthur Fitzmaurice, the head of the Catholic Association for Lesbian and Gay Ministry (CALGM), a group that is currently under censure by their local Catholic bishop for misrepresenting Catholic teaching. Fitzmaurice says in the videos that his “coming out” experience as a homosexual “strengthened my faith journey”. At first he said he had asked God, “how do I leave this cross behind me, how do I become a straight man?” which he said changed in time to “a realisation that God made me to be this gay person”. 

Fitzmaurice says that his group only wants “to create a Church where all are welcome at all parishes. And once they’re there, not just being welcomed, but a place where they’re going to thrive.” 

However, in June of last year, Bishop Salvatore Cordileone of Oakland, where CALGM is based, issued a statement saying that the group cannot be regarded as “authentically Catholic” due to their opposition to Catholic teaching.  (more...)

UCLA Reprimands Students for Refusing Sex Ed Class During Freshman Orientation

A pro-life group says UCLA officials reprimanded two incoming students for refusing to participate in what they said was a graphic sex education class that was a part of UCLA’s freshman orientation.

Two Catholic students, twins Bella and Angelica Ayala, 18, say they were reprimanded by UCLA employees for respectfully refusing to be part of a graphic sex ed presentation tacked on to the university sexual harassment session at their freshmen orientation. They also say literature they wanted to distribute that promoted abstinence that the students offered to fellow students beforehand was confiscated.

The Ayalas say they were given  mixed messages by academic advisers prior to the presentation.  Angelica was told she could leave for the sex ed portion, but after she walked out, she was reprimanded and told that she must make the session up. According to university requirements, refusing to do so would place an academic hold on her records, she said.  (more...)

Most countries are improving, and the worst and poorest countries are improving the most (as you would expect).  But many high performing rich countries - including Canada, Finland, Australia, and New Zealand - are deteriorating.   These aren't relative scores that compare us to others, they are the summative scores that reflect how our kids are doing year over year.  Canadian students did worse across the board - reading, math, and science - in PISA 2009 than in PISA 2000.  Our large drop in science seems particularly worrisome.  (more...)

Pilot abused his position at British Airways to molest hundreds of girls at African orphanages

A British Airways pilot used his position to abuse hundreds of vulnerable children in African schools and orphanages, the Daily Mail can reveal.

First Officer Simon Wood, 54, claimed he was carrying out charity work for the airline while molesting scores of young girls during his stopovers in Africa.

Dressed in a bogus captain’s uniform, he would use the airline’s good name – and even BA branded toys and colouring books – to lure children out on day trips and to five-star hotels used by the airline, where he would abuse them.

British Airways is now facing a hugely damaging lawsuit brought by his victims, who say the company failed to protect them from his horrific abuse.  (more...)

Nightclub Manager Named Notre Dame’s Liaison to Homosexual Students

The former general manager of Notre Dame’s on-campus bar and nightclub will now serve as assistant director for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) student concerns, according to the student newspaper The Observer.

Maureen Doyle had since 2011 served as General Manager of Facilities and Programming at Notre Dame Legends. According to an online biography, she previously served two years as the program coordinator for late night and weekend programming within Notre Dame’s Student Activities Office. She reportedly obtained a Masters of Education degree in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Student Affairs from Northern Arizona University, where she worked in the residence halls.

Earlier this year, Doyle delivered a lecture called, “I'm Sexy and I Know It: A Look at the Portrayal of Gender in Popular Music”  (more...)
