Former Montreal North mayor Gilles Deguire arraigned on sexual assault charge

Former Montreal North borough mayor Gilles Deguire leaves his Montreal North home
Former Montreal North borough mayor Gilles Deguire, charged with sexual assault of a minor, was arraigned at the Montreal courthouse Wednesday morning.

He was not present, represented instead by defence lawyer Alexandre Bergevin.

“Given the nature of the charges, you can deduce how he’s doing,” Bergevin said outside the courtroom after being asked how his client has been since learning of the charges.

Deguire, 66, is charged with sexual assault and sexual touching of a minor under the age of 16. According to his arrest warrant, the acts would have allegedly taken place in Montreal and elsewhere in Quebec between Dec. 1, 2013, and Oct. 23, 2015. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 14 years.  (more...)
