Shed shielded alleged sex crimes from village


NEW MIAMI — An Apostolic church, the village hall and the police department crowd a small block in the village of New Miami.

It’s the same block — just 300 feet from where police officers come and go from their office — where detectives allege Luke D. Buchanan raped and molested adolescent boys in his two-story shed.

At least six neighbors, all of which abutted Buchanan’s yard, could see the structure’s bright blue roof from their window.

Often times, neighbor Charlie Withrow, 67, would spot children gathering around the cedar-stained shed, which had a basketball goal attached. He didn’t think much of the scene, since two young kids— Buchanan’s sons — also lived at the home.

“There were a lot of boys over there,” said Withrow, whose backyard runs against the Buchanan house. “I would see them over there playing ball a lot.”  (more...)
