While Toronto trustees debate how and when to publish details of their expenses online, one has gone ahead on her own and publicly released four years’ worth in frustration over the delay.
Trustee Sheila Cary-Meagher proposed a motion last December to force detailed expense reports — including receipts —to be posted, following the lead of city councillors and Toronto Catholic trustees.
Four months later, at their April meeting, trustees finally approved the move. But now the board is figuring out how to post and organize the information, and how far back the expenses should go. (more...)

Benjamin Levin, a professor at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and a former provincial deputy education minister, says the Catholic trustee election is important because it is an opportunity to show that elected school boards still play an important role in the governance and functioning of Canada’s education systems.
“But any time there’s a feeling that the trustees aren’t exercising their responsibilities appropriately, that’s a bad thing, not just for that board, but for all local school boards.”
