The State of New York is refusing to release records about the Zionist extremist group Betar USA, citing an ongoing law enforcement investigation, The Electronic Intifada can reveal.
The organization is notorious for its role in getting students arrested or deported from the United States for speaking out in support of Palestinian rights.
In October, The Electronic Intifada filed a freedom of information request with the Office of the Attorney General of New York State seeking documents related to Betar’s noncompliance with New York’s nonprofit fundraising laws.
The reply from the attorney general’s office on 3 December stated that “the records that respond to your request are exempt from disclosure and have been withheld” because “the documents requested were compiled for law-enforcement purposes and would, if disclosed, interfere with law-enforcement investigations or judicial proceedings.”
The attorney general’s response cited a state law that allows records to be kept from the public if a law enforcement agency determines that releasing them could interfere with an ongoing investigation, deprive a person of a fair trial, disclose information or sources relating to a criminal investigation or reveal criminal investigative techniques.
The Electronic Intifada has filed an appeal seeking the release of the records.
The attorney general’s denial of the freedom of information request does not reveal whether it is Betar USA as an organization, any of its individual staff or officers, or some other party, who are being investigated. Nor does it name the law enforcement agencies involved.
The New York State attorney general’s press office did not respond to an emailed request for comment by a deadline.
Betar USA responded to a request for comment sent to its email address with the statement: “We confirm from Betar Worldwide headquarters in Tel Aviv you are a jihadi.” (more...)
