Serendipity? Teachers boycott sex ed training in labour dispute


WATERLOO REGION — The Liberal government says its controversial sex education program can still launch in September, even as teachers boycott training sessions.

Elementary teachers withdrew from Ministry of Education training initiatives starting Monday as a tactic to press the government for a new contract.

This means two local teachers will not participate in training planned this week to help school boards implement the new sex ed curriculum.

"We will have fewer people attending," said Mary Lou Mackie, executive superintendent of education with the Waterloo Region District School Board. "However, the ministry has indicated that future training for teachers will be provided once labour situations return to normal."  (more...)
