On 28 October 2025, Francesca Albanese, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, updated the UN General Assembly's Third Committee.
Special Rapporteurs are experts, appointed by the Human Rights Council, who report back to the Council and other UN bodies where Member States meet. Their reports help Member States form common positions on pressing human rights issues. Special Rapporteurs are not UN staff members, and the UN does not provide them with a salary. They work voluntarily and independently to maintain the impartiality of their views.
