Today, December 12, McMaster’s BoG postponed the vote on divestment.
Despite 434 days of relentless calls for action, McMaster continues to delay divestment, claiming that a decision would be “premature.”
Premature? In those 434 days, we have witnessed the depths of human cruelty manifest itself into the near annihilation of our people. In what world is 434 days of genocide considered “premature”? Should we expect change only once our people are completely erased, when their suffering is no longer a burden on the Board’s conscience?
We are students of McMaster—here to learn, grow, and excel. Yet, despite the weight of exams and academic responsibilities, we still find the time and energy to fight for justice because we know it cannot wait. We see the urgency. We feel the urgency. So why can’t they? How is it that we, as students, can set aside our studies—our futures—to stand up for what is right, while the Board of Governors continue to sit in their polished offices and fancy clothes, too cowardly to make even a simple decision? Are these the so-called role models of your Brighter World, @mcmasteru? Is their cowardice and ignorance what’s supposed to inspire us?
With every day that the vote is delayed, and with every moment that passes without divestment, more Palestinian lives are lost. Each second of inaction allows the machinery of oppression to continue unchecked, stripping our people of their dignity and deepening the scars of their suffering. The Board’s refusal to act is not just a failure of leadership—it is complicity in genocide.
We, yet again, call upon the Board of Governors to bring forward a motion on divestment.
We, the students, will not stop and we refuse to rest until it is achieved. This is our promise to you, and to the BoG.
